Devotion for the Tenth Day of Christmas

I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
    incline your ear to me; hear my words.
Wondrously show your steadfast love,
    O Savior of those who seek refuge
    from their adversaries at your right hand.
Keep me as the apple of your eye;
    hide me in the shadow of your wings,
from the wicked who do me violence,
    my deadly enemies who surround me.
They close their hearts to pity;
    with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
They have now surrounded our steps;
    they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.
He is like a lion eager to tear,
    as a young lion lurking in ambush.
Arise, O Lord! Confront him, subdue him!
    Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,
from men by your hand, O Lord,
    from men of the world whose portion is in this life. ~ Psalm 17:6-14

The Lord is our refuge who delivers us from danger. He hides us under the shadow of His wings—like a mother hen protects her chicks under her wings to protect them from danger. He shows His wondrous, steadfast love in many ways, but most of all in sending His Son to save us from our sins. There is no danger we face that has everlasting ramifications like our own sinfulness.

Thank You, Lord, that You save us from eternal damnation through Your Son Jesus, who came to save us from our sins. I get fearful of physical danger and of hurt and emotional pain, but these are temporary. The only thing that can harm me forever is turning away from the salvation that comes from faith in Christ Jesus. Keep me grateful and faithful. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
