Devotion for Good Friday

Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. ~ John 19: 30

When Jesus gave up His spirit, not only was His physical life finished (at least temporarily), but His mission was finished. He had accomplished His purpose by carrying our sins and dying for them, paying the penalty that we should have paid. Previously, animals had been sacrificed regularly for atonement, but Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself paid the penalty once and for all. It is finished.

Lord God, thank You that my sin is finished. Jesus paid the penalty, and I am no longer guilty in Your eyes. I am truly sorry for all I have done that I shouldn’t and all that I haven’t done that should. Empower me by the Holy Spirit to live the way You want me to live. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
