Deadline Nears for New Voices
September 23, 2009 by Lillie
Middle school and high school students have less than a month to polish and submit their entries into the EPIC New Voices writing competition for teens.
Students (public, private, and home schools) can enter poetry, short stories, and essays. There is no cost to enter, and winners in each category as well as the grand prize winner receive valauble prizes. Every student receives written feedback from three judges—authors, editors, teachers, and librarians. The critiques include both areas of improvement and positive encouragement.

Sounds like a great motivation for young to develop their writing skills. I wish I had such an opportunity when I was in school.
Andrej,
It is really a wonderful opportunity for young writers. Getting feedback from publishing professionals is great for aspiring writers of all ages, but especially for students.
Lillie, its sad that I didn’t grab much of these writing opportunities while I was a kid and then student
But this younger generation is gifted with such incredible channels through which they can exhibit and at the same time develop their skills. And the best of all is that entries can be submitted online which makes students from anywhere. Thanks for sharing this with me and I will ask my grand kids to give a try.
Regards,
Mack!

Mack,
I don’t know why your comments always end up in spam. Theoretically, after I approved the first one, they should automatically post. There are just a few times this hasn’t worked, usually with someone who has words like “free” in their URL or keywords. Maybe Las Vegas? At any rate, just wanted you to know something in your comments triggers Akismet, but I do find and approve them.
Thanks for passing this on to your grandkids. I’m not sure there were many opportunities like this when we were in school.
Even if these kids don’t win this competition, I think that it is wonderful for them to receive feedback from judges. It’s never fun to be judged, but it can be helpful if it is positive and honest feedback, especially when you are a writer.
C,
The judges are instructed to include at least one positive comment, no matter how bad the work is. At least they can congratulate the student for having the courage to submit their work and encourage them to keep writing.
The judges also give constructive critique—only honest feedback helps the writer learn and improve.
Lillie, that was a real eye opener. I am clueless why it is always reaching the spam folder. I am really thankful for your patience and for being so kind enough to find my post and bring it back from spam. Thanks a bunch
I have changed the title this time and I guess this will automatically make it to the live version.

Mack,
This time it was waiting for approval, not in spam. So I think now that I have approved this one, they will go through in the future. It looks like Akismet doesn’t like Vegas.
Lillie, thanks again. I am wondering why akismet doesnt like vegas. Its terrible thing to associate vegas to spam
I blog around other places and none of them has told me this before. Thanks for the alert. I think its high time for me to check with others as well as write an email to akismet support to find out a solution. Will keep you posted.
Cheers!
Mack

Mack,
This one came through without approval. Yay! I don’t know what the deal is, but I couldn’t figure out anything else that could remotely be considered spam. And when you used different keywords, the comments didn’t end up in spam.
At that age, I loved to read but had no earnest intentions to write. I salute those who start early on. They are the wave of the future.

Morgan,
I guess I caught the writing bug in high school when my English teacher read my short story to all her classes—and the students laughed in the right places.
Sounds like a nice little competition.. I only wish I wasn’t so old now that I’m ineligible for entry. Its sad everytime you pass an age barrier that bars you from doing something you always enjoyed!

Lillie, thanks for the information. I got to forward this news to my colleague, Mrs. Dickinson, as she’s the teacher who teaching English lesson in my workplace…
I bet she’ll try her best to encourage her students to join the competition!

wilson,
Thanks for spreading the word. Note this competition is for junior high and high school students so adult students are not eligible.
