The Knight-League Scholarship

February 13, 2009 by Lillie

A reader e-mailed me and asked me to help spread the word about the Knight-League Scholarship, a writing competition for high school seniors that will award three $5,000 scholarships.

Holly Alonis wrote:

I write to you as an online liaison for the LEAGUE, which is a school and web-based system for service learning that empowers young people to make a difference in their communities. …

The KNIGHT scholarship is a national scholarship competition where 3 students will be awarded $5,000 each for their writings or reflections on their civic experiences in one of three categories …. The scholarship is open to high school seniors from all over the country; even students who are not part of a LEAGUE classroom can apply!

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promotes excellence in journalism worldwide and invests in the vitality of 26 U.S. communities. Since 1954, the foundation has given more than $300 million in journalism grants.

I hope you can join me in supporting The LEAGUE by informing your readers about this scholarship opportunity.

If you are or know a high school senior who writes well and who could benefit from a college scholarship, enter or encourage them to enter the Knight/LEAGUE Scholarship competition. The deadline is March 6.

Glad to give you the reminder. I was not familiar with the scholarship, but it sounds like a great opportunity for high school seniors.

      Lorraine,

I had a lot of different scholarships that helped me get through college (along with working 20 hours a week) so I’m glad to help young people today enjoy the same benefits I had forty plus years ago.

  4. tracy from hair straighteners says:

scholorships helped me get through college. With rising tuition going up faster than inflation, scholorships are a must for some students.

    • Lillie says:

      Paul,

Like you, I would not have made it through college without scholarships along with a work-study program.

  6. Paul from Money for College Students says:

Great article, I actually know a soon-to-be senior in high school who is very interested in journalism so I will be sending them this link. Thanks for posting!

    • Lillie says:

      Paul,

I assume this scholarship is given every year so your student could enter next year. You may also want to write about it on your blog in time for your readers to enter next time.

  7. anupam from Class cpr online says:

    Great post.
I wish that more student get the scholarship.
It will really help the kid who are talented want to higher study.

    • Lillie says:

      anupam,

There are only three scholarships each year in this program aimed at students interested in journalism. There are many other scholarships from other organizations related to other fields. I depended on scholarships and work programs to get through school, so I’m always glad to spread the word on opportunities.

  8. Frank Jackson says:

Will there be another round next year? I have a friend who is a really keen writer and might benefit from this scholarship. She’s also of the kind that really needs it, so it would be a great opportunity for her!

    • Lillie says:

      Frank,

I’m not sure if this is an annual competition, but it would be worth watching the organizations’ Web sites.

  9. Craig from diamond engagement rings says:

I think I have missed it, but checked their site and they seems to give more scholarships in future to so anyway thanks for the information.

  10. ditya from Abible college says:

    Hi Lillie,
Very nice post.It is great that some people win the scholarship.I wish that i win the scholarship.
    Thanks and regards
    Aditya

    • Lillie says:

      Aditya,

Applying for the scholarship takes some work—students had to write something that was judged to select the winners. There are a lot of scholarships that require differing amounts of work to earn.

  13. Girish from Car Rental Auckland says:

Lillie, seems to be a recurring program. I checked out their website and the deadlines listed now are October 15, 2009, December 15, 2010, February 15, 2010. Submissions are to be made on a rolling basis and still interested people can participate. I will forward this to my friend who has a daughter studying in the high school. Such scholarships are essential in building any nation with a bright future.

  14. Michael from Christchurch Motel says:

Its sad that such a wonderful scholarship is not available for participants across the world. But the concept chosen by the organizers is really cool. I am sure students can write more about civic awareness cause they see a lot of things which adults pay less importance to their work burden.

    • Lillie says:

      Michael,

Perhaps other organizations offer similar scholarships in other parts of the world. Each organization has to focus on using its resources in the way it considers most effective and most in keeping with its goals and objectives.

  15. Adam from iPad vs HP Slate says:

It’s great to see this type of encouragement for writing. In my school they don’t care much for writing/reading.

    -Adam

    • Lillie says:

      Adam,

Writing and reading are critically important to students. I can’t imagine a school not giving them the attention they deserve.

  17. Looks like a good competition. $5000 won’t go as far as it used to toward a college degree but every little bit helps.

However, it sure is easy these days to copy and paste prose online these days.

I sure hope the admins have a good plagiarism tool handy.

  18. Thank you for this article. Scholarships help students a lot. Even a little amount can help a great deal.

    • Lillie says:

      Sally,

I really appreciate scholarships as I would not have made it through college without receiving a variety of scholarships of varying sizes.

I always think it’s good to have scholarships for students for specific talents and interests.

  20. I like that there are entities who provide scholarships to students with specific talents. This is a good motivation for them to pursue their talents.

  22. Thomas from Easy Scholarships says:

I’m pretty sure that the “Knight-League Scholarship” fund is not an easy grant to win, but if your article is written in a way that touches the judge’s soul, you just may win $5,000+ that can be applied towards your college degree and school expenses…

    Sincerely,

  24. Al de Leon says:

The Knight-League Scholarship is a very good opportunity for many writers to improve themselves and enhance their writing skills. I admire the goodness of different scholarships like masters scholarships as these scholarships truly make an enormous difference in the lives of many students. These scholarships lead students to the right path. I am a Journalism graduate and I’m happy to read such article because I believe that there are so many good writers from all over the world but not all are given the chance to share their talents with others. I think this kind of article somehow brings hope to all the writers out there.

  25. Lillie says:

    Al,

While the scholarship is related to writing, I think the encouragement it gives is more to college students in general rather than to writers in general.

  26. justin from scholarship listing blog says:

      Jenny,

I wouldn’t have made it through college without scholarships–or at least it would have taken me much, much longer.

  29. Is this scholarship going to be provided in 2011?

    • Lillie says:

      Ryan,

I have no idea. As I indicated in the post, I provided information sent to me by a reader because I thought my readers would be interested. I have no affiliation with the scholarship program and no knowledge of it other than what is included above. You now know as much as I do about it. :-)
