The Knight-League Scholarship
February 13, 2009 by Lillie
A reader e-mailed me and asked me to help spread the word about the Knight-League Scholarship, a writing competition for high school seniors that will award three $5,000 scholarships.

I write to you as an online liaison for the LEAGUE, which is a school and web-based system for service learning that empowers young people to make a difference in their communities. …
The KNIGHT scholarship is a national scholarship competition where 3 students will be awarded $5,000 each for their writings or reflections on their civic experiences in one of three categories …. The scholarship is open to high school seniors from all over the country; even students who are not part of a LEAGUE classroom can apply!
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promotes excellence in journalism worldwide and invests in the vitality of 26 U.S. communities. Since 1954, the foundation has given more than $300 million in journalism grants.
I hope you can join me in supporting The LEAGUE by informing your readers about this scholarship opportunity.
If you are or know a high school senior who writes well and who could benefit from a college scholarship, enter or encourage them to enter the Knight/LEAGUE Scholarship competition. The deadline is March 6.

Oh, I nearly forget about this competition, Lillie.
Thanks for the reminder, and I will tell my students to participate as soon as possible!

wilson,
Glad to give you the reminder. I was not familiar with the scholarship, but it sounds like a great opportunity for high school seniors.
I really admire institutions who support deserving students to have a better education and brighter future.
I hope they will learn about this great offer.

Van,
I agree that organizations that help students are to be commended.
This scholarship is going to be very helpful to assist smart and talented students with their schooling. Thanks Lillie for being kind enough to share this. More power to you

Lorraine,
I had a lot of different scholarships that helped me get through college (along with working 20 hours a week) so I’m glad to help young people today enjoy the same benefits I had forty plus years ago.
Thanks for this lead on a scholarship. My daughter is starting college this fall and we are trying to gather up as much financial aid as we can.

tracy,
Good luck to your daughter, in this scholarship competition and in her college career.
scholorships helped me get through college. With rising tuition going up faster than inflation, scholorships are a must for some students.
Paul,
Like you, I would not have made it through college without scholarships along with a work-study program.
Great article, I actually know a soon-to-be senior in high school who is very interested in journalism so I will be sending them this link. Thanks for posting!

Paul,
I assume this scholarship is given every year so your student could enter next year. You may also want to write about it on your blog in time for your readers to enter next time.
Great post.
I wish that more student get the scholarship.
It will really help the kid who are talented want to higher study.
anupam,
There are only three scholarships each year in this program aimed at students interested in journalism. There are many other scholarships from other organizations related to other fields. I depended on scholarships and work programs to get through school, so I’m always glad to spread the word on opportunities.
Will there be another round next year? I have a friend who is a really keen writer and might benefit from this scholarship. She’s also of the kind that really needs it, so it would be a great opportunity for her!
Frank,
I’m not sure if this is an annual competition, but it would be worth watching the organizations’ Web sites.
I think I have missed it, but checked their site and they seems to give more scholarships in future to so anyway thanks for the information.
Craig,
I’m always glad to share helpful information.
Hi Lillie,
Very nice post.It is great that some people win the scholarship.I wish that i win the scholarship.
Thanks and regards
Aditya
Aditya,
Applying for the scholarship takes some work—students had to write something that was judged to select the winners. There are a lot of scholarships that require differing amounts of work to earn.
Any news if there would be a similar contest this thir quarter of 2009? I am interested on this and hopefully get the scholarship

jenny,
I haven’t seen any recent information, but I expect that the scholarships are awarded no more often than annually to relate to the school year.
Thanks anyway Lillie for the quick reply.
You’re welcome, jenny. I’ll post new information if/when I receive it.
This is a great opportunity, and something I will recommend to my students. Thanks for sharing!
Bill,
The deadline for this competition has passed but hopefully the contest will happen again in future years.
Lillie, seems to be a recurring program. I checked out their website and the deadlines listed now are October 15, 2009, December 15, 2010, February 15, 2010. Submissions are to be made on a rolling basis and still interested people can participate. I will forward this to my friend who has a daughter studying in the high school. Such scholarships are essential in building any nation with a bright future.

Girish,
Thanks for checking this out. I’ll be posting more information later on.
Its sad that such a wonderful scholarship is not available for participants across the world. But the concept chosen by the organizers is really cool. I am sure students can write more about civic awareness cause they see a lot of things which adults pay less importance to their work burden.
Michael,
Perhaps other organizations offer similar scholarships in other parts of the world. Each organization has to focus on using its resources in the way it considers most effective and most in keeping with its goals and objectives.
It’s great to see this type of encouragement for writing. In my school they don’t care much for writing/reading.

Adam,
Writing and reading are critically important to students. I can’t imagine a school not giving them the attention they deserve.
This is a great program. It actually helped out my father back in ‘55!

Susan,
I wonder if it’s the same program. The Web site of the LEAGUE says it was started in 1998.
