National Bible Week 2010

Holy Bible

National Bible Week has been observed during Thanksgiving week since 1941.

One of the things I’m most thankful for is the freedom to read and study God’s Word. National Bible Week is a reminder to use that freedom regularly.

I read the Bible daily, and I’ve written about National Bible  Week in previous years—20072008, and 2009—as well as a two-part series on reading the Bible.

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. ~ Romans 15:4, ESV

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. ~ 1928 Book of Common Prayer, Collect for the Second Sunday in Advent

  1. Lillie, thank you so much for bringing this to attention. I didn’t know about it. I’m glad for it, though. I have noticed that I have not found the time to read the Bible as much as I should and I’ve really wanted to make it a daily habit. I hope that this week, I can do that. It’s so important to know Bible!

      Dawn,

I have found that I have to put my daily devotion/Bible reading on my to-do list to make sure it gets done (and there are occasional days it gets missed). I also try to do it first thing before I get bogged down in other things, but sometimes a phone call or something gets me off on a different tangent.

The Philippines began celebrating National Bible Week and National Bible Sunday annually after President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Presidential Proclamation no. 1923 on October 27, 1979 in recognition of the Bible “as an excellent source of principles for the development of moral and personal discipline.” Celebration of NBW every last week of January was re-emphasized by President Corazon Aquino’s Proclamation no. 44 in 1986.

Is it still National Bible Week? It’s nice to see that the Holy Scriptures get a whole week and not just a day like most National ____ days. :)

    • Lillie says:

      Joy,

National Bible Week runs from the Sunday before Thanksgiving through the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Of course, reading and studying Scripture is good to do any time. :-)

  4. Madelyn says:

So is National Bible Week in November? or every last week of January as Ramona said above? I read about it last January (January 2010).

    • Lillie says:

      Madelyn,

It depends on where you are. If you are in the US, it is Thanksgiving week in November. If you are in the Philippines, it is in January.
