Gone from My Sight

September 23, 2012 by

My beloved husband Jack went to Heaven this morning. I will miss him terribly but I am so glad that he is no longer in pain and no longer confused. May Light Perpetual shine upon him.

O GOD, whose mercies cannot be numbered; Accept our prayers on behalf of the soul of thy servant departed, and grant him an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of thy saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. – 1928 Book of Common Prayer

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. ~ John 14:1-3 (KJV)

Gone From My Sight
by Henry Van Dyke

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, “There, she is gone”

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me — not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, “There, she is gone,”
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!”

And that is dying…

  16. Lillie, I am so sorry for your loss. My heart weeps for you. I read this yesterday and was saddened. Reading it again today made me sadder still. But I am glad he is with the Lord and healthy again. And I love the title you chose for this blog post. It is so true of death. We are not really “gone” when we die. We are gone from a person’s sight but we are still there in a person’s heart and in memories. You are in my prayers. May God comfort you during this time.

    • Lillie says:

      Dawn,

The blog post title came from the title of a pamphlet the hospice social worker gave me. The booklet’s title came from the title of the Van Dyke poem quoted in the pamphlet.

  17. Juliette says:

I seriously don’t know what to tell you at this point of time. I wish I had the right words to make you feel alright. I know how hard it is to even breathe when someone close to you passes away. But life is never fair. All you can do is let time heal your pain. For now all I can say is think of all the beautiful time you spend with him and pray to God.

    • Lillie says:

      Juliette,

I was blessed to be with Jack constantly for the last few weeks of his life. Before that, I was with him most of the time for the previous year and a half.

  19. Leo from Accountant Salary says:

Oh Lillie, I am so sorry. It looked like he was on the mend there, so this is quite a shock. You have my thoughts and prayers.

    • Lillie says:

      Leo,

I knew he was not on the mend, that any improvement would be temporary. However, I didn’t expect to go quite so fast. We put him in hospice, which is care for terminally ill patients typically when they are expected to have about six months left to lives. He didn’t even live six days after he entered hospice care. But I am thankful that he went quickly and easily–he didn’t have a long period of suffering.

I’m so sorry for you. Years of togetherness, that happy retired life, snapped in a moment. I believe he would’ve willingly endured more pain just to stay with you for a some more time. May he rest in peace. And know this, we are always with you, if not around you.

  22. I cant imagine the pain you must be feeling right now. Me and my family are praying that God gives you strength and courage to live through this testing times. Hope wherever your husband is, he is happy and at peace. I just want to say that we all are there for you to support you in your time of need.

    • Lillie says:

I know how much you must be missing him. But somewhere round he wants you to stay happy. I deeply feel bad for you. Hope you will come over this soon. Take Care!

    • Lillie says:
