September 8, 2011 by Lillie

Another blogging milestone: 20,000 comments!

Of course, since I reply to every comment, there are really only about 10,000 comments from readers. I say about because when I revamped and moved my blog about three years, threaded comments (including all my responses) were lost. So I don’t actually know many comments I have received, but as of today, 20,000 comments appear on posts here. Thanks to each commenter and each reader. I appreciate you all!

In the same time period, I got more than 350,000 spam comments, so 20,000 doesn’t seem like so many. :-)

Corrected 9/24/11: Just discovered I was looking at only six months of spam comments. I’ve actually had nearly 835,000 spam comments in the same time period as 20,000 legitimate comments!

Hi, Lillie. Congratulations on all your success with this blog. Here’s one more comment to add to your collection! ;o)

  2. Bluestocking says:

    Wow! That’s incredible!

    • Lillie says:

      Bluestocking,

When you consider that I’ve replied more than 10,000 times in comments, I wonder if I’ve written more words in comments than in posts. :-)

  3. Mia says:

One more comment for you! I think that even spams have a point: you get so many spams, because your blog is so popular and nice :)

  4. Paul W from MandolinMan says:

20,000 real comments is quite a milestone. Reading through your blog I can understand how you reached such heights.

  5. Joseph from Texas Website Design says:

Dang, congratulations! 20,000 comments is a really big deal. Let’s make it 40,000!

  6. aveed from Ndoctorate degrees says:

You are very caring blogger. I think care has effect either it is online or offline. Congratulation on this brilliant success.

  7. Russell Davison says:

Congratulations Lillie. That’s a truly amazing amount of two-way conversations going on here. I always make a point of heading your way every week. It’s like popping into Aunt Lillies for a cup of tea and homemade spice cake. Your topics are refreshing changes from the plagiarised content of so many blogs these days. Also, according to my blog analytics, a few of your readers venture onto my business oriented blog as well.

    • Lillie says:

      Russell,

You’re always welcome at Aunt Lillie’s for tea, cake, and my thoughts. :-)

I’m glad to hear that a few readers are finding their way to your blog from your participation here.

  8. Darin Cunningham from Nashville real estate says:

Wow! Congratulations, Lillie! I’ve always loved your posts and I’m sure a lot of people do so as well.

  9. Congrats Lillie! On the good comments that is, not the spam :-P

  10. Ted from Part Time Ted says:

    Lillie,

I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to respond to each comment. I am sure that is a huge part of the reason why your blog is so popular.

Also I wanted to thank you for having such a comment friendly blog so that we may engage in conversations here that benefit each of us in more ways than one.

  11. Jason from Infrared Heaters says:

Wow, 350K spam comments, huh? Hope you’ve got a pretty good spam filter going on. Deleting all the spams could be more work than responding to the legits!

    • Lillie says:

      Jason,

Akismet catches most of them. The number of 350,000 comes from my Akismet stats. Unless someone has asked me to look for a comment they left that may have gone into spam (which is rare), I just wholesale all spam comments every day.

  12. Jason from Infrared Heaters says:

BTW, I just noticed a small problem with your commenting instructions – they say you’ve got 15 minutes to edit your comment, but right now I’m watching the counter tick down just 5 minutes.

    • Lillie says:

      Jason,

Thank you for letting me know. I had set it for 15 minutes, but when I checked just now, somehow it had changed to 5 minutes. I’ve reset it to 15 minutes.

  13. Ash says:

20k… Wow, congratulations! I wish I had even half of that :D

    • Lillie says:

      Ash,

Remember half of that is what I really have in comments from other people because I respond to every comment. And my blog has been active for five years, so it’s had a long time to accumulate many comments.

  14. Rhys from How To Preach says:

    Congratulations Lillie

Your personal touch is the key here, it is not really all that common, and your readers like your replies, and the fact of being appreciated themselves.

    G & P – Rhys

  15. Simon says:

That’s an incredible achievement Lillie. It goes to show that if you put time and effort into your passion results will come. Well done!

  16. Susan from Antelope Valley Homes says:

Wow, if you compare 350,000 bad comments to 20,000 good ones, it’s 1/17.5 comments are valuable. Nonetheless, 20K is an impressive amount, so congratulations on your comment milestone.

  17. Armanda says:

Wow. This is a great number of comments. Congratulation. But 350.000 spam comments… This number is huge. Sounds like a lot of work to find and delete all those comments.

    • Lillie says:

      Armanda,

Fortunately, Akismet does an excellent job of sorting out the spam. Only occasionally do I have to look at spam–if someone writes me that their comment didn’t appear and they think it went into spam by mistake. Usually I just go to spam and hit the delete key and watch hundreds of spam comments disappear.

  18. Kyle from Y8 says:

With lots of automated software popping out nowadays and selling like popcorn spam comments are really inevitable specially on blogging sites.

  19. laurie martin from iheater consumer reviews says:

Well congratulations for your success. Include this one comment of mine to your collections and you did a great job having all of this comments
