Scripture for the First Sunday in Lent

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” ~ Luke 4:1-4 (ESV)
Lord God, just as Jesus resisted the devil with the words “it is written,” help me to know Your Word so well that it will protect me against all temptation. When tempted by the world, the flesh, and devil, let me respond, “it is written …” In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Exciting News: Always Keepers Press

After I had a stroke several years ago, I couldn’t read for several months. Having been an avid reader all my life, I was devastated until I discovered audio books. Although I didn’t expect to enjoy hearing a book as much as I enjoyed reading a book, I did.
Now, I’m very excited about a new audio publishing company—Always Keepers Press, founded by author Donna Wright. The company opens today with the launch of its first book, Between a Clutch and a Hard Place by Gayle Trent.
Myrtle Crumb buys a purse from a consignment shop and finds a note inside. The note leads her to believe something bad might have happened to the purse’s previous owner, so she investigates.
I enjoyed this book when I read it several years ago, and I know the audio version will be just as great.
Gayle will be here next Saturday, February 27th for an interview. On Wednesday, March 3rd, I’ll interview Donna about starting her new publishing company.
One more exciting bit of news: Always Keepers Press will release my mystery novel Dream or Destiny in audio in April!
I’m thrilled that Dream or Destiny will be available in audio, and I’m thrilled to be part of this great new publishing company.
Scripture for the First Saturday in Lent

And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” ~ Luke 5:30-32 (ESV)
Lord, I am a sinner in need of a physician. I repent of my sins. Forgive me and heal me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Scripture for the First Friday in Lent

And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. ~ Matthew 9:15 (ESV)
Lord God, Jesus sacrificed His life for me and my sins, yet I seldom sacrifice to show my love and devotion to You. I need the help of the Holy Spirit to take the time and effort to fast and pray and worship—to focus on You instead of on myself. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Lord, I want to follow You, but it’s so easy to get caught up in the cares and temptations of the world. Help me to put You first in my life. Empower me by the Holy Spirit to deny myself and take up my cross daily. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Ash Wednesday and Lent

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.
In my Ash Wednesday post last year, I shared that growing up in a non-liturgical church, I didn’t understand Ash Wednesday or Lent. Now I appreciate this special season of penitence in preparation for Easter.
Often Christians give up something—a favorite food or activity, for example—for Lent. I am adding something—an extra daily devotion. I will be posting a short Scripture and prayer each day of Lent for my own benefit. I pray you will share these devotions with me.
Father Chip Harper says that evangelicals have a term for what takes place during Lent: revival. May you experience a deepening of your faith and a closer relationship with the Lord during this season.
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. ~ Matthew 6:1 (ESV)
Heavenly Father, guide me to do my good deeds in secret out of love for You and not to be seen by others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
