Scripture for the Second Wednesday in Advent
December 9, 2009 by Lillie
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.
Heavenly Father, turn our hearts from apathy and self-centeredness and empower by Your Holy Spirit all of us who love You to encourage one another and build each other up. We ask this in the name of Your Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

This is my favorite. It’s the one I’ve always associated with what should be a Christian attitude. Help one another. Support your friends. Support your enemies. Let love lead the way.

Lori,
“…what should be a Christian attitude.”
Amen!
Encouragement is such a huge part of making it through life! I think it is wonderful to have a Christian family around to support you and build you up, whether or not your own family is willing to do it.
Chuggin,
Absolutely—we all need encouragement and support, and not everyone gets it from their earthly family.
How terribly important it is for us to encourage and edify one another and yet how incredibly difficult it can be when we allow ourselves self-focused (or self-righteous) thoughts!
Jeanne,
Oh, and don’t we give in to those self-centered/self-righteous thoughts all too often?
I have read your all scripture series post and found every post as a lesson of spirituality. This one is also one of them.
Thank you, Dash. I’m glad readers are finding these helpful.
If we focus on the word, ‘build each other up’, that’s a very powerful thing and it means a lot. In today’s world where everyone is building their fortune by rotting others and cheating, scamming others this line does remind us what really our purpose should be. Prosperity, happiness and success lies in the fact when we help each other up and sort out our differences and work together. Everyone should try to help the other person achieve a good position in the society and not try to ruin them to benefit from them.
That was my opinion based on my understanding of this line, however I may be wrong to understand this.
Kurt,
I tend to think of this verse more in spiritual than worldly terms. However, I agree that cooperating and helping others rather than focusing on self is what’s important.
