Veterans Day

November 11, 2009 by Lillie

Today we honor our military veterans, defined by an unknown author this way:

A Veteran — whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve — is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to The United States of America, for an amount of: ‘Up to and including my life.’

flag_us_wavingThank you to everyone who has served our country so our flag still flies flee and proud.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, in whose hands are the living and the dead; We give thee thanks for all those thy servants who have offered their lives in the service of our country. Grant to them thy mercy and the light of thy presence, both now and ever. Stretch forth, we pray thee, thine almighty arm to strengthen and protect the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines of our country. Support them in the day of battle, and in the time of peace keep them safe from all evil; endue them with courage and loyalty; and grant that in all things they may serve without reproach; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Hi Lillie!

In our country we celebrate Remembrance Day today and it is particularly focused on the WW1 conflict – but I have to agree with your sentiments and prayers as you have expressed them here. Patriotism is commendable wherever it exists.

    Blessings – Rhys

      Rhys,

Our Veterans Day started as Armistice Day for World War I veterans but long ago was expanded to honor all veterans.

    Lillie,

One thing I have always admired about America is the patriotism which your country has and how you guys lift up those who have the courage to do their duty – especially in dangerous circumstances.

Though I am not an American myself, your country is a great ally and friend of our country and there are countless Americans who have sacrificed themselves not only for the most worthy cause of protecting your own country but in worthy assignments on foreign land.

I certainly share in your prayers for all who serve your country in this manner. They are certainly worthy of our prayers as well as our thoughts and full gratitude.

I am a veteran and I have two sons in Iraq presently. I am glad that lately there has been a movement to honor veterans unlike the 70′s when I joined the military.

      Donny,

Thank you for your service and thanks to your sons for their service. The way veterans were treated in the Vietnam War era is shameful.

Hi Lillie – Do American’s get the day off work on Veteran’s Day? I noticed that in some Canadian provinces, they have a days hoiday on November 11th.

Over here in the UK, our Rememberance day is on the closest Sunday to the 11th. I don’t understand why they have it on that day and I have to wonder if it’s so they don’t have to have it as a national holiday.

I think it’s insulting to those who fought in the war, to make our futures better, that our country doesn’t officially keep to the 11th.

    • Lillie says:

      Cath,

It is a national holiday. Government offices and banks are closed on Veterans Day, but a lot of private businesses stay open.

I agree that those who have sacrificed so much for others deserve to be honored appropriately. So many people around the world don’t recognize and appreciate how much soldiers have done for all of us.

  7. prash says:

We should salute to soldiers who fight every minute to keep country safe.

    • Lillie says:

      prash,

Absolutely. No matter what country (unless it’s a dictatorship with a corrupt military), we should support the soldiers who protect us.

  8. avid Adams from Dlocksmith morgan hill says:

yeah pal i agree with you, No one in this world, who would not fear of death, but those who go beyond fear for their nations are called courageous and truly patriotic soldier.

  9. Patrick Oden says:

My veterans’ day was great. I got to go visit my grandmother in the nursing home (where she is hopefully only on a two- to three-month stay), and take her to watch one of my cousins give the ‘keynote’ (3-minute) speech for the 11th hour ceremony at the courthouse.

It was a lot of fun, and a great activity for remember and honoring our veterans.

  10. Charlie from discount shoes online says:

      leny,

Too often we take for granted the sacrifice and service of those who have done so much. Veterans Day is a good day to remember and express our gratitude.

May lord bless all those immortal souls, and may we pray that we don’t come across such chaos in near future.

  15. i from SLeadership says:

Risking your life. It’s such an unbearable hard to imagine concept. I mean, we watch films and programmes everyday in which we see action heros and other unreal characters that smile in the face of death.

In reality, when confronted with ones own mortality – the realisation that it could actually be YOU. That your entire life could be ended at this point, is just unthinkably tradgic, and I have the utmost respect for anyone who serves on active duty.

There is an old saying about war and which is often repeated on ANZAC Day in the southern hemisphere:

    “Lest We Forget”

Any Veteran’s Day or day which commemorates those who have been lost in war or who are fighting is a day to remember the sacrifices of previous generations and of the full horror of war.
