Thanks for Helping Me Support NDVH
November 9, 2009 by Lillie
Thanks to everyone who ordered a copy of Dream or Destiny during October or made relevant comments on posts in the domestic violence series between October 28 and October 31. With your help, I donated $250 to the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I wish there were a lot more zeros in that number, but books published by small presses don’t sell millions or even thousands of copies, and I know every donation of any size helps.

You are absolutely right. Every bit helps, regardless of size. Plus, who knows? Maybe someday there will be a lot more zeros in there.
Patrick,
I’m looking forward to the day when there are more zeroes.
Great going! I’d say that $250 is a pretty impressive donation, I’m sure it’ll go to good use.
Pete,
I am sure the donation will be put to good use.
That’s great Lillie!
Bluestocking,
Thanks for your help by posting the podcast.
Sorry that I didn’t get a chance to contribute but would be glad to look at the next time.

Emil,
Thanks for your interest.
Hi Lillie,
It is great that you donate 250$.
Thanks, John. I’m glad to do it.
Thank you for doing this, it’s good to see that people still care.
John,
Thanks for your support.
Hi Lillie,
It is great that you donate some part of your income to charity.
Aditya,
I had hoped to raise more money than I did, but I’m glad to do what I can.
How nice of you to donate!
I`m sure it will put to good use. I just wish the government would make a bigger contribution as well…
Roger,
I’m all in favor of more done by individuals and private companies and less done by government. I believe government’s role is protection, so laws to protect victims and punish offenders come from government. But help for victims and prevention programs should be done by non-government agencies and individuals.
Speaking from experience the government doesn’t know how to handle domestic violence. My mother was abused but everytime she called the cops nothing would happen when she tried to get government help they turned her away. after years of taking it she went to a private shelter and finally got the help she needed. In my opinion the government was no help to her.

April,
I’m so sorry about your mother’s experience. I don’t know how long ago that was, but I hope it wasn’t recent. I know law enforcement is doing a much better job than it used to. My husband had to take continuing education courses in domestic violence every two years for his certification. I’m sure there’s still need room for improvement, but I hope that women are generally treated better by law enforcement than they used to be. For many years, domestic violence was considered a family matter and government didn’t get involved at all. Now there are laws and police are getting better at enforcing the laws. Even one poorly handled situation, though, is one too many.
I’m glad your mother finally got the help she needed.
It’s always a great thing to still see people in this day and age helping out. It was a great gesture.
Thanks, Tina.
this is such an important cause to help with.
