Happy Labor Day

September 7, 2009 by Lillie

Picnicking!

Hope you’re enjoying family, friends, fun, and food this Labor Day weekend.

Labor Day began as a holiday for workers who were union members. Today it’s a holiday for all us: union workers on the assembly line, nonunion workers in the discount store, corporate executives, entrepreneurs—and even freelancers.

Relax and have fun!

I’ve just spend my quality time with my parents and we have a great conversation during our lunch and dinner.

Mikaela,

An excellent way to spend a holiday. Too often we think we have to be doing something exciting to be having fun, but most of the time quiet time in conversation and togetherness with loved ones is the best times of all.

Finally made it back here thanks to the holiday. LOL.

And yeah, I wholeheartedly agree that you can have the best of times just sitting with the family and talking about “stuff”, any stuff at all. For me, holidays are also the time to just relax and unwind at home.

Terry,

We all need some down time, just relaxing and unwinding.

Hah, yesterday Honorable Boy 1 was crowned with a new title – Drama King Extraordinaire. What a day that was….but hey, parenting….it’s a hero’s journey. :)

Barbara,

What a great description of parenting: a hero’s journey. There’s nothing more important.

I am a freelancer, so is it bad that I worked a half day on Labor Day??? Yikes! I do need to stop being such a workaholic, but I did have Friday off because my sister was in town, so I think that is close enough :)

C,

I’m laughing because I actually worked all weekend and Labor Day. I agreed to do this to meet a deadline for an author to get his book to the printer by this morning in order to get the books in time for a big launch he has scheduled. But I’m taking time off during the week to make up for it. As you say, that flexibility is one of the best things about freelancing.

wilson,

I actually labored on Labor Day. :-) A client had a deadline on finishing a book, and I promised I would work over the holiday weekend to get the book ready for the printer by Tuesday morning. But then I’ll take some time off later in the week so it will be fine.

Hope you had a lovely weekend.

dharma,

To be enjoyed, yes, and sometimes to remember or honor tradition or celebrate religious or other beliefs. In the case of Labor Day, to honor people who work (and I hope beyond just members of labor unions to include all people who work) as well as to enjoy.

Jake,

Labor Day certainly isn’t my favorite holiday. I prefer days that have meaning to me, such as Christmas and Easter. However, I’m certainly glad to observe Labor Day as well, and spending time with family is always worth doing.

You lucky guys. We weren’t given a holiday last Labor Day. Oh well, as long as we get a bigger paycheck for the month, I guess I won’t really mind. ^_^

Louise,

Hey, my mean boss (me!) didn’t give me the day off, either. :-) I was on deadline to get a client’s book to the printer, and I worked long hours not only on Labor Day but all weekend. I relaxed a little several days during the week, though. That’s one of the advantages of being a freelancer.

How come your Labour day is not on the first of May? I thought this was the internationally adapted Labour day.

Andrej,

Our Labor Day has the first Monday in September for nearly 120 years.
