Happy 3rd Birthday to A Writer’s Words, An Editor’s Eye
June 11, 2009 by Lillie
Blogging is so much a part of my life that sometimes it seems like I’ve been doing it forever. On the other hand, sometimes it seems as if I’ve just started.
In fact, I started three years ago today. The numbers tell part of the story:
- 566 posts, including nearly two dozen series with 2 to 14 installments
- More than 8000 comments—I don’t know the exact number because when I moved my blog last fall all my nested comments disappeared
- Almost 140,000 spam comments since I moved the blog in September 2008
But the numbers don’t tell the whole story.
I’ve learned so much from reading other blogs, from researching for my own blog posts, and from interacting with readers in comments. Though it’s hard for me to evaluate, I hope I’ve become a better writer through blogging.
Most of all, I’ve met so many wonderful friends from around the world. I love carrying on conversations in comments. Often more valuable information comes from my readers in comments than from what I write. For example, my post about a way to donate books to literacy programs turned into a fascinating discussion of illiteracy in comments.
I would love to recognize all my blogging friends, but this post would be way too long. And I would certainly overlook someone. Thank you to each of you who read and comment on my blog and who motivate, entertain, and educate me through your blogs.
I’m looking forward to many more years of blogging and sharing cyberspace with all of you.
I’m celebrating my blogging birthday, along my birthday and my wedding anniversary, with My Special Days Dream or Destiny Promotion. Everyone who orders Dream or Destiny during the month of June will receive a free e-book of a contemporary romance, Fern’s Fancies, and a chance to win a virtual gift basket of e-books.
You can order from my publisher or Amazon.com and send me a copy of the receipt to receive your free e-book. Or you can order an autographed book directly from me.

Three years already! Wow. Happy birthday Lillie, and thanks so much for being such a generous blogger, not just here, but all over the blogosphere

Joanna,
Thank you. Three years is getting pretty old in blog years.
Congratulations Lillie!
Thank you, Bluestocking.
Your comments always appear late because they always go into spam though I don’t know why. One of the mysteries of life—or at least of WordPress and Akismet.
Happy, happy blogiversary!

Thank you. Yes, I’m getting old.
Well done! Three years is good going.
Thanks for the replies on the other thread by the way, I replied to your comment but I’m not sure if it went through, let me know if not.
Stephen,
Thanks for the good wishes.
I think you are saying that you commented again on the comment spam post. If so, it did not go through. This comment was in spam—it’s possible I missed one when I cleaned out spam at some time, but I didn’t intentionally delete a comment. Sometimes when there are a lot of spam to go through I get tired of seeing all the junk and tend to hurry through. It’s possible that I could overlook one legitimate comment among dozens of spam comments. I’m guessing it’s the word “free” in your keyword, but I don’t know for sure.
If you leave another comment there, I’ll try to keep an eye out for it in spam and approve it.
Hi, thanks for all your help on this. This is just a test comment more than anything. The offending word removed, did it get through?
Stephen,
This comment didn’t go into spam, but it went into moderation. Try again to see if it will go through without moderation now that I have approved this one. It looks like the word free is the problem, but you need to try one more time to see if it works right.
Trying again! So not everything goes into moderation?
EDIT: Looks like it worked as it appeared straight away.
Stephen,
Yay! It worked.
My policy is that all commenters are moderated on their first comment. Once I approve the first comment, all future comments should appear immediately, as this one did.
I can blacklist someone after the first comment but have had to do that only once. I approved a legitimate-sounding comment, and the next day, the commenter left more than a dozen comments. When replying to them, I came across one that sounded familiar. I discovered that it was simply a repeat of what a previous commenter had said. I went back and checked and discovered all were duplicates of other people’s comments. It took several comments to catch it because the person was commenting on older posts that had a lot of comments so I didn’t recognize right away that what s/he was saying had been said before.
Sometimes Akismet blocks certain commenters even though I have approved the first—or many—comments. I have a few commenters who always end up in spam, and I have to retrieve the comments. I haven’t figured out why for most of them, but now we know it’s “free” in your keywords that was sending you to spam.
Congrats on blogging for three years! That’s gotta be like, 50 internet years. Keep up the good work.
Simo,
I’m getting old, aren’t I? But I’m having fun.
One more year and your blog’s ready for preschool. lol.

Ronnica´s last blog ..Defined
Thanks, Ronnica. I didn’t know how long you had been blogging as I only discovered your blog a few months ago.
8000 comments is amazing! Unfortunately, 140,000 Spam comments is also amazing, but in a bad way. Won’t spammers ever learn?
C,
I can’t imagine that spam works, but it must work well enough that the spammers are willing to keep doing it. You’d think it would be a total waste of time and money.
Wow! Blogging for 3 years. Thats incredible. Seems like I’ve been blogging for a decade yet its only been a few months! haha.
Ron,
When it’s been three years it will seem like forever—and like you just started.

You’re halfway to three years.
When you consider that most bloggers either fail or give up in six months, three years is an outstanding run. Keep up the great work, it’s definitely something to be proud of!
