Global Day of Prayer 2009: 10 Days
May 21, 2009 by Lillie
In the post on the National Day of Prayer, I mentioned the upcoming Global Day of Prayer on May 31st.
Today is the beginning of the 10 Days leading up to the Global Day of Prayer.
The Global Day of Prayer is a call to united prayer. The 10 Days preceding the Global Day of Prayer creates an excellent opportunity to unite in prayer with millions around the globe, based on Acts 1 + 2. The 10 Days helps us to gradually build a lifestyle of prayer in our communities, as well as to focus our prayers much wider than our personal and national needs as we pray with millions during this time.
You can download a 10-day Prayer Guide if you would like to join in prayer for the next 10 days.

I should also join this Global Day of prayer 2009; I think that everybody should join here and lets pray for the Global economic problem, Pandemic Disease(Swine Flue) and to stop the global warming. Come and join in this event.
Bretagne,
Yes, there are many things to pray for and the more people who join in praying for the world, the better.
I have heard of the national day of prayer but not a global one, so it’s good to have a heads up!
C,
A lot of my readers are outside the US so I wanted to share something that would be available to everyone.
Is there a theme to the global day of prayer? I mean is there a main subject matter that everybody prays about
Keegan,
Not a specific theme as in praying for peace or praying for provision, but the mission describes what people should pray for: repentance and blessing/healing of the nations.
From the GDOP Web site:
There is a theme for each of the 10 days of prayer leading up to the Global Day of Prayer. You can download a prayer guide on the GDOP Web site that shows this.
For example, the theme for Day 1 (today) is
I also think we should commit ourselves to “daily” prayer instead of a day of prayer. Don’t get me wrong, I think a day (or 10) focused on uniting people to pray is a great thing, I just hope we can help people see the need for regular prayer and connecting to God.
Lee,
Thanks for reminding us of the obvious. Daily (several times a day) prayer is so important to me and so much a part of my life I didn’t even think to mention it.
A day set aside for specific prayer (for our nation, for the world) is an addition to our daily prayers with extra prayers with a focus common to people praying all over the country or all over the world. Certainly these days should not be a substitute to regular prayer, but an addition to it.
I think the 10 days of global prayer are a great thing. It begins on Ascension Day and concludes on Pentecost Sunday (Two of the most neglected Christian celebrations that tie into Easter). My Church is participating and it is great to have a time of focused prayer for revival.
Randy´s last blog post..Ascension Day Evening- 10 Days of Global Prayer
Randy,
Ascension and Pentecost are too often overlooked. Both are signficant days on the church calendar that should be celebrated more widely.
I think that 10 days of global prayer is a great start. Eventually I would like to see the prayer movement multiplied – even to the point of places holding prayer 24/7.
This might sound a bit extreme to some, but honestly I think we should humble ourselves and pray! We are in desperate need of it!
Randy,
It doesn’t seem extreme to me. The Bible says “pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 17).
Lillie, I’ve clicked the globaldayofprayer’s link several times, but the page doesn’t load properly at all! I’m wondering what’s the problem here…?
wilson´s last blog post..It’s Not a Wise Method To Cool down Yourself Immediately After Exercises!
wilson,
The link should work unless there’s a temporary problem, but it might be slow. I’ve had occasional problems bringing up the page, too, but most of the time it works even if it’s a little slow.
I never heard of it before. I love this though and shall spread it to all. I think we should have such days all over the world. There are too many issues and we should pray for all of them altogether.
Vanessa,
I’m glad that now you are aware of the Global Day of Prayer you will participate and pray.
Sounds awesome.
As Christians we must never under estimate the power of prayer James 5:16
David Batchelor
David,
James 5:16 is one of my favorite Scriptures. I’m the Webmaster for our church Web site and put that on the page about our prayer ministry.
I never realised that you had a prayer ministry, do you head it up?
I am sure in that case that you have many testimonies to answered prayer?
I have been involved in missionary work over the years and am building my LifePath Unlimited business so that I can continue to do so. It makes things harder with a family so if you could pray into that, I would be most greatful.
David Batchelor
David,
We have a very strong prayer ministry. I don’t head it up but I am a member of the team. In addition to praying myself, I receive all the online requests, distribute them via e-mail to the prayer team, and add them to the prayer list that is provided to all parishioners so everyone can participate in the prayer ministry.
We do have many testimonies of answered prayer. In fact, I wrote a series of posts of testimonies on some of my own answered prayers for healings.
I will submit your prayer request. If you ever want to submit one yourself, you can do through our online prayer request form.
It’s a little sad that people need a special day to pray. If someone feels the need to pray they should do it more often than once a week. And if someone doesn’t what good will one day do?
tom´s last blog post..Jedwab
tom,
That’s certainly a different reaction.
I pray several times every day, but I welcome the opportunity to pray in a focused way for the nations of the world at the same time millions of people around the world are praying for the same thing. Having a special day to unite people in a special prayer focus in a blessing to me, not sad at all.
Now, if what you are saying would be the case—that people don’t pray on other days—that would be sad. But I seriously doubt that anyone who doesn’t pray regularly would bother to participate in the Global Day of Prayer or any other prayer event. I am sad for those people because of their lack of faith—if they had faith, they would pray.
Oh I think that 10 days of global prayer is a great start. Will be nice to start a chain prayer!

McKlun,
Chain prayer is great, but praying together all at the same time is a wonderful way to observe the Global Day of Prayer. Regardless of how one prays, though, if we all pray for the same things on the same day, it will have an impact.
That global day of prayer is awsome .. it may one of the ultimate change of the worlds ..

ribon,
I certainly believe prayer can change the world, and millions of prayers going up around the world together can definitely make a change.
It is good to know that world still has people who believe in prayers. Majority of my fellow bloggers and site owners don’t believe in prayers so I am going to send your manual in the post. I am surprised to see that prayer guide.
Zula,
Most bloggers I know do believe in prayer, and so do most of my readers. I appreciate your distributing the information and prayer guide by e-mail. The more people praying, the better.
By praying, we believe in God’s power. We ask His help, to help us making this world a better place.
Fabs (if you wrote YourName@Keyword, I could address you as a real person, and you would still get your keyword link),
Very true. If we didn’t believe God can and will take action as a result of prayer, we wouldn’t do it. Another important reason for prayer, though, is developing a relationship with God and thanking and praising Him. Sometimes it’s so easy to spend our prayer asking that we forget to thank. Both are important.
Altough iam not a christian (iam a hindu), but i believe that a pray can give us change to my life and others.

Jenifer,
I am interested in your thoughts. I know very little about Hindu beliefs.
I hope prayers will help unite people and end conflicts around the world.
Ryan,
Amen to that!
I think the necessity of a specific theme is not that essential. As long as we all make selfless prayers for worlds peace and prosperity our prayers will reach heaven quickly. I missed this years event and I am marking my calendar for May 31 2010 which happens to be a Monday. All set for a perfect and remarkable event. Will try to rope in as many fellow New Zealanders. Lillie you are so inspirational. I am awestruck time and again by your meaningful posts. You are doing a remarkable job and I have no wonder now on how you got the premio dardos award. I think your blog should be made role model for non commercial blogging methodologies.

Girish,
Next year the Global Day of Prayer will be on May 23. It is always on Pentecost Sunday rather than on a particular calendar day. The Web site already has information about next year at http://www.globaldayofprayer.com/.
Thank you for the kind words about my blog. I’m glad you like it.
Lillie, I am in for next years prayers. That doesnt mean that I dont pray daily. By May 23, I will have my blog ready and I wish to contribute like you by writing posts and spreading it across folks.
PS: Sorry for chucking my name out. You were right and it was accidental. Thanks for showing patience to write an email to me regarding the same.
Michael,
I look forward to seeing your posts next year. We all need to pray daily, but an annual focus when millions of people pray in agreement for the world can be very powerful.
With the state of the world as it is, EVERY DAY needs to be a global day of prayer.
If nothing more than a simple “thanks” for the numerous blessings each one of us enjoys.
Globally starts locally. Pray hard.

Mark,
You are so right. The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. However the Bible also tells us to pray in agreement with each other—that makes our prayers more powerful. Having millions of people focus and agree in prayer makes every prayer more effective.
Well, it would appear the National Day of Prayer for 2010 is just around the corner.
Paul,
Just around the corner … after 3 more weeks of Lent, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, another month … But as fast as time goes, that is just around the corner.
It’s good to know people dedicate in this kind of activities. Thank you for this nice post. It made my day.
Amie,
This happens every year and will be coming up again soon.
This would be really a great day where people comes and Pray for the goodness of all and the betterment of the country.

Andy,
The Global Day of Prayer is actually praying for the entire world and all its people.
Hi there,
Will there be Global Day of Prayer for 2010?
Thanks for answering…
Catherine,
The Global Day of Prayer has already happened for 2010. If you follow the link to the GDOP Web site in the post above, you will find the date for 2011 (which is June 12th). If you search my archives, you will find the post about Global Day of Prayer 2010.
