Virtual Writers Conference

May 19, 2009 by Lillie

virtualwritersconfHow would you like to attend a writers conference and learn from a couple dozen authors, editors, publishers, publicists, and marketing experts?

You may think such a conference is too expensive and would require too much time away from work. If so, you’re wrong.

Author Gayle Trent is sponsoring a Virtual Writers Conference  from May 19 through May 22. The conference is free, and you can participate on your own schedule. Just visit the conference blog and read contributions by the likes of marketing guru John Kremer, literary publicist Penny Sansevieri, and an assortment of talented writers, editors, and publishers.

My Seventeen Tips for Self-Editing appeared on May 19th, and I anticipate learning  from each of the articles posted during the conference.

Attending a conference in person is exciting, educational, and expensive. Attending the Virtual Writers Conference can be exciting and educational, but it’s totally free. See you there!

Ronnica,

I think it will be an excellent way to get lots of great advice in one place in a short time period right from your own computer on your own schedule.

Hope you are having your best time at the conference, best luck with it. Hope that you share what you have learned.

Either I’m not a very good writer or you didn’t read the post carefully … or maybe both. :-)

This is a virtual conference. You don’t need me to share anything. You can attend yourself. All you have to do is to visit the virtual conference Web site and read all the posts.

Lillie,

This sounds interesting, and if I get a chance, I will certainly have a look at what the various contributors have to say.

Personally, I am giving serious consideration to enrolling in a part time course in writing and editing next year, so I am hoping to learn as much as I can about the entire writing, editing and publishing process before then.

Andrew,

There is a wide variety of articles in the virtual writers conference. Some will be very helpful to you, others less so because they are about topics or kinds of writing you may not be doing. However, I find I can learn something even from unrelated topics, so I’m reading them all.

Good luck with the course you plan to take.

this is really interesting because I had no idea how a virtual writers conference could even work, and it’s great that you can participate on your own time.

C,

Many writers can’t attend a real-world writers conference because of scheduling or finances. So a virtual conference is an excellent idea.

Hi Lillie, hope you’ll excuse if this is a second post…I think my first got gobbled up. So, here’s what I said: Just popped in to check out your Wordpress skills and girl, you rock this blog! Really like the way you’ve set up navigation; makes it easy to get around all this fantastic info. Enjoyed your conference post, too- you’re one busy writer, huh? :-)

Cathy,

I don’t know what happened to your first comment—I didn’t find it in spam. Sorry you had a problem and glad you left another comment.

Thanks for the compliments. Ease of navigation is so important on a Web site. I like to keep things simple—no flash, music, etc.—because I get frustrated when I get bogged in a lot of bells and whistles and can’t find the basic information I want to know.

I enjoyed your conference post as well and will check out your blog.

I like the idea of a virtual conference! Although I also like the idea of escaping from the home office, getting out of the house and seeing people.

Sounds like something for everyone and that is why I’ll be heading over there to see what it is all about. Thanks for the share, Lillie!

Matt,

Like you, I recognize value in going to a live conference, meeting people, changing your routine. But many writers can’t participate in live conferences because of schedule conflicts, financial considerations, health issues, or other reasons. A virtual conference is a good alternative for them, and also nice as an extra event for those who can attend conferences.

Gosh, I missed this opportunity, Lillie! :( I bet it must be a very interesting virtual writer conference, just like other live seminars, isn’t it? By the way, I loved your “Seventeen Tips for Self-Editing” post!

wilson,

No, you didn’t miss it. All the articles are posted on the blog—rather than attending a physical conference to hear speakers, in the virtual conference, you read blog posts. So you can read them anytime. In fact, if you read my article, you’ve “attended” at least part of the conference. :-)

This is a great idea , Lillie. Why didn’t I think about it first? :) It reminds me of the carnivals, just with a different name. I read a few articles there – some excellent advice. I learned a lot and I was reminded of a lot of things I knew but forgot or ignored.

Mihaela,

This is similar to a blog carnival except it’s a one-time event and many of the carnivals are ongoing (though I haven’t looked at carnivals lately so maybe I’m wrong about that). Also the articles were submitted as guest posts rather than being on the blog of the person who wrote them and linked from a carnival post. Thanks for reminding me about blog carnivals; I might take another look.

This is such a fabulous idea. I’m hoping this catches on so more people can benefit from the wonderful knowledge sharing at conferences.

By the way Lillie, your post on self-editing tips is extremely helpful for all virtual writers and bloggers. I have bookmarked it for easy future reference. Thank you.

I agree the virtual conference is an excellent way for people to benefit from the knowledge available at a conference without having to travel. Although it doesn’t offer the same kind of in-person networking, a virtual conference does allow participants to “talk” to the presenters through comments. Of course, there are advantages to being in a different environment and out of our ordinary routine in attending a real-world conference, but the virtual conference is excellent when you can’t attend a live conference.

I’m glad you found the self-editing tips helpful.

What a great idea! I can’t believe I missed it. :-( I’ve been out of town. Actually, I was at a writers conference for part of that time, so maybe it balanced out. :-)

Renae,

The beauty of a virtual conference is that you can’t miss it. :-) All the “presentations” (articles) are still online so you can read them at any time. That way you got to attend the real-life conference (hope it was great!) on schedule and can still attend the virtual conference whenever it’s convenient.
