Armed Forces Day 2009

May 16, 2009 by Lillie

armedforcesday2009smToday is Armed Forces Day in the US, a day to honor our military and thank them for their service.

Thank you to everyone who makes personal sacrifices and risks their lives for our security. And thank you to their families who sacrifice so the military members they love can serve their country.

O LORD God of Hosts, stretch forth, we pray thee, thine almighty arm to strengthen and protect all the members of our country’s armed forces. Support them in the day of battle, and in the time of peace keep them safe from all evil; endue them with courage and loyalty; and grant that in all things they may serve without reproach; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    • Lillie says:

      Reza,

The focus of Armed Forces Day here is to honor the servicemen and women. At some of the military installations, weapons may be exhibited, but that’s not a major focus of the day.

  2. Andrew says:

    Lillie,

Certainly, there must be many families in your country who have family members serving on overseas missions in various places around the world, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan.

No doubt these postings would at times be very stressful, both for those in the forces themselves as well as for their friends and family members.

I admire any man (or woman) from any country, including of course the U.S, who has the courage to join their national forces and fight for their country. They are certainly worthy of our prayers as well as our respect.

    • Lillie says:

      Andrew,

I agree—it takes someone who is brave and altruistic to fight for their country, and all are to honored around the world.

  3. Deaneh from YourKeywords says:

You’re right Lily, it takes someone to be a serviceman/servicewoman.

And to their families who also make the sacrifice not just when they(servicemen) serve their country but especially after the service. Outcomes of war unpredictable.

    • Lillie says:

      Deaneh,

Yes, the families sacrifice so much, and you make a good point that it may be harder when they go home than when they are deployed. I have a friend who is an Army chaplain, and he says there are a lot of divorces and other family problems after soldiers return from deplyment. It is a terrible stress on everyone concerned.

  4. Medical Jobs Australia says:

Salutes to the heroes ! Hopefully they will be remembered everyday than just one day a year.

    • Lillie says:

Medical (if you wrote YourName@Keywords, I could address you as a real person, and you would still get your keyword link),

Yes, we should remember our heroes every day. Sometimes it’s nice to have a special day to focus on honoring them.

  5. We should all stop and think about what these brave men and women have and are sacrificing for us.

    • Lillie says:

      Morgan,

It’s easy for us to get busy and not give much thought to what’s going on in war zones and what our brave military men and women are doing. We should appreciate them all the time, but a day like today is a good reminder to stop and think.

  6. homas from tweb hosting reviews says:

I think every day should be Armed Forces Day. Being ex-military myself (veteran of the first gulf war) I know exactly what they sacrifice.

Some people do not see it as a sacrifice at all, but in reality it is.

      thomas,

Thank you for your service. I know military service is a tremendous sacrifice for both the service members and their families. They deserve recognition, honor, and appreciation always.

  7. This day shows the patriotism of the nation..

  8. Erik from Curtains says:

It’s just proper that a day be set aside to honor the men and women who put their lives on the line, in order to keep the country safe. That said, the country should also make sure that soldiers have access to protective equipment, health care, and educational opportunities, as one way to show our thanks.

    • Lillie says:

      Erik,

I agree completely. Our military members and veterans should be treated well. We can never repay them adequately for their sacrifices, but we as a nation should make sure they are provided for.

  9. Coupon Mom says:

Thank you to all the wonderful men and women that serve our great nation! We love all of you and hope you will safely return home very soon!

  10. Val from Zero Gifts says:

My brother is a military and the whole family always celebrate the Armed Forces Day to honor my brother’s bravery and dedication to serve the country. For his wife, it’s always an Armed Forces Day for her every time my brother arrives home safe and sound after serving the country. Cheers to all the military and to their families!

    • Lillie says:

      Val,

You and your family also deserve recognition on Armed Forces Day. The sacrifices that all military families, especially spouses and children, make are just as significant as those of the military members. They missed their loved ones, deal with added responsibilities, and worry constantly. They may not put their physical lives at risk like the servicepersons do, but they put their emotional and family lives at risk.

      Thank you to all!

  11. okinawa marine says:

I served in the Marine Corps and can attest to the work our servicemembers do, as well as their families. Thank you all for your service.

The armed forces are make a huge contributions to the safety and stability around the world and I think they deserve a day a year, where they are in focus. Thanks for advertising for this day Lillie. They really deserves it.

    • Lillie says:

      Figgie,

It would be a wonderful world if we didn’t need armed forces. Unfortunately, we must have them to protect us, and we owe them our thanks and respect.

  14. Mandi says:

Many blessings to our troops they have the hardest job. They deserve our utmost respect.

  15. Peter from Forex Robot Reviews says:

God bless our men and women in uniform. Sometimes we forget that we have fellow Americans fighting thousands of miles away to protect our freedom. They deserve our respect and prayers.

    • Lillie says:

      Peter,

People who don’t have loved ones in the military can forget where they are and what they are doing. The families of those brave troops never forget. It’s good for all of us to remember and express our gratitude.

  16. am bored says:

All our military members—Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard—are heroes.

  17. Brad from Race Equipment says:

Especially with our troops spread across the globe in hostile zones, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day have an even more important meaning.

God bless those that have previously or are presently protecting our nation. All politics aside, the citizens of the USA love you and thank you!

  18. The sacrifices these men and women have made in our honour should make us all stop and pray.

Let’s all set aside some time to think of them, without them we would not enjoy the freedoms we do.

    • Lillie says:

If you see a soldier thank them, and let’s pray they all come home safely.

    • Lillie says:

      Addy,

Your comment reminds me of an ad I saw on TV recently. A soldier comes homes and is all alone in the airport and walking out on the streets until one person appears on the street and thanks him. Then the streets and sidewalks are filled with people. I didn’t see the whole ad so not sure the purpose but I assume it was to encourage us to support the troops, especially returning soldiers.

  22. Patricia says:

It is good that people pay respect to those who lay down their lives for our security. But why just one day? I think it should be celebrated everyday-everyday should be an armed forces day! If they were not protecting us 24/7 would we have been so safe? My prayers to all those who sacrificed their lives for the greater good of the nation and its citizens!

    • Lillie says:

      Patricia,

I agree we should honor our servicemen and women every day. However, if Christmas came every day, it wouldn’t be special. So I think having one day set aside to really focus on honoring our military members makes us pay more attention.

      • Martha says:

Yeah Lillie you are so right. Think about why there is only ONE Mother’s Day or only ONE Father’s day in a year. The fact that such occasions come only once in a year make them so special to us.

        • Lillie says:

          Martha,

I’ve always heard we need some bad weather to appreciate the good. Anything that happens all the time loses it specialness.

  23. abby from dirt devil filters says:

      Faraz,

The particular observance I’m observing is a US celebration to honor our Armed Forces. However, other countries may have similar celebrations—I don’t know.

  27. Mia from engagement rings says:

Touching prayer Lillie. My cousin is in Iraq right now and though we’re trying to live our lives normal, we cannot hide the fear that we feel sometimes for him.

    • Lillie says:

      Mia,

Thanks to you and your family for your cousin’s service. I recognize that the families make sacrifices for their loved ones to serve.

  28. lynne from Security guard says:

What a great idea to honour your Armed Forces in this way. We do nothing like that here in the U.K. It’s quite appalling when you think about it because these brave men and women deserve to know that we are indebted to them for the sacrifices they make.

    • Lillie says:

      lynne,

It’s certainly important to thank the military and their families for the sacrifices they make for their countries and for the entire world.

  29. Robert from mountain bike shorts says:

Freedom isn’t free although it is cherished within countries that believe in and promote freedom, without our armed forces those who prefer power rather than freedom would attempt to take what is not theirs to take by force.

  30. jan from outdoor billboard says:

thanks for this, i am currently developing a site to help those in the armed forces. i will for sure point to this article once it is done.
