I was just helping a client edit an academic paper, and I find that very difficult because I want to make the paper readable instead of academic. :-) Of course we can write perfectly understandably and still repeat ourselves and overuse specific expressions as this post talks about. Some people think that using bombastic words can improve the whole article. I think that the most important thing is vision and writing should be clear enough to illustrate it. However, any word can be overused, and each of us has our own pets. You may want to look "allow" up in the thesaurus and find some synonyms that will work. jenni,
