Yes, this is from the Passion of the Christ. It is a very powerful movie—often painful to watch but it really brings home the sacrifice Jesus made for us. Our church shows it every year on Good Friday.
There are several explanation of why it’s called Good Friday. I mentioned some of them in my post on Good Friday 2007.
Some people the name was originally God’s Friday and somehow got distorted through the years.
However, I like the explanation that this terrible day is called “Good Friday” because as a result of that awful event, God has turned it into good, the ultimate good, in fact. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, everyone who accepts Him is washed free of sin and saved to eternal life. That is good! And all because of what happened on Good Friday and Easter.
I watched this film the year it came out and I’m pretty sure it’s also been premiered on UK terristerial tv. But anyway with Easter 2009 upon on us, with the Easter eggs bought and placed on the mantles, with the fish bought for Good Friday and the pies and buns baked it’s really easy to forget what Easter is really about and what we should remember.

Yes, there are many things to distract us from the meaning of the season. That’s why I’m participating in Holy Week services at our church as well as some extra private devotions.
Although many find this film very difficult to watch, I couldn’t imagine a better way of bringing the point home as to how much he sacrificed and suffered for all of us.
How right you are. When I turn away because I stand to watch what’s happening, it’s a powerful reminder that not only did He watch it, He suffered it! And He did it for me and for you.
I think most people tend to become very emotional watching this. Just seeing the cruelty of people would tend to do this, but then it is magnified many times when we realze Jesus went through this for our salvation. He had a choice, and He choose to suffer for us.
Is this the passion of the Christ? I never saw that movie!!
Bluestocking,

As tomorrow is the Good Friday of 2009, I have a doubt Lillie..
Why is it called ‘Good’ Friday keeping in mind what happened this day that time?
sriraj,

The first one is the common thing that happens when past comes to present.
But the second reason, as you said seems apt.
sriraj,
It could be a bit of each—it started out God’s Friday, then along the way people started saying Good by mistake and others decided it made sense.
We watched this film in its entirety last Sunday, and this portion that you’ve posted struck me. It was one of those “Aha!” moments.
Renae,
There is so much in that movie that you can watch it over and over again and have new Aha moments every time.

And so to church on Easter Sunday, I think!
Thanks, very thoughtful post!

Justin,
You’re welcome and God bless you.
This sure is a tough movie to watch, but a very well made one. I own it on DVD and watch it on TV some time, but I just skip the parts I don’t like.
God bless!
Greg,
I can’t watch some of the most painful scenes, but it is definitely powerful.

This film was very very difficult to watch, i cried at times.

I think it is great that a movie like this was able to be made in today’s overly political correct environment.
michael,
Yes and not only made but a commercial and popular success.
