Words Matter Week

February 27, 2009 by Lillie

A comment posted on my recent post on Freelance Writers Appreciation Week alerted me to another week for freelancers.

Janice Campbell, Director of National Association of Independent Writers and Editors (NAIWE), let me know that March 2-6 is Words Matter Week.

NAIWE, which describes itself as “The professional association with the business-building difference,” is an organization of freelance writers and editors, both commercial and literary.

Words Matter Week is “an exciting week of teleseminars, book giveaways, and a charity challenge for First Book!”

Speakers include:

  • John Kremer, author of 1001 Ways to Market Your Books
  • Peter Bowerman, author of The Well-Fed Writer and The Well-Fed Self-Publisher
  • Linda Leigh Hargrove, Novelist
  • Jeff Herman and Deborah Levine-Herman, Literary Agents
  • Tim McMullen, co-founder and managing partner of tech company UltimIT Solutions
  • Ruth Thaler-Carter, award-winning writer and editor with over 30 years experience, who will be speaking on “Getting Started in Editorial Freelancing”

You can learn more on the Facebook event page for Words Matter Week.

You can also contribute to First Book to help give children books of their own.

I’d love to go to that. I’m working on my first novel right now. I mainly write humor related things and want to create something all my own. My goal is to one day live off of writing income, not having to work for the man anymore.

    Jeremy´s last blog post..How do I rollover my 401k?

    • Lillie says:

      Jeremy,

The event is online so you can certainly participate.

Good luck with your writing. If you reach the point you can make a full-time income from fiction writing you will be in a very small group. It’s difficult to make a living from book royalties alone unless you achieve the success of a JK Rowling or John Grisham. Hope you achieve your dream.

What would be fun if in Words Matter Week get a pile of Bloggers to post their thoughts under the tag WordsMatter to build awareness.

Thank you, Lillie, for remembering the celebration. It’s going to be an interesting week.

I love Greg’s idea of having bloggers post on the topic. Let’s spread the word!

Bloggers, please consider yourselves invited to write on the idea that “words matter.” I’ve added a Mr. Linky to the news.naiwe.com blog, so that people will be able to easily find the various posts. This ought to be interesting!

Thanks, Janice. I will post an update so readers who have already read the post or who read in a feed reader and miss the comments will get your note.

I don’t know why your comment was held for moderation—it should have gone through since you’ve commented before, but perhaps you used a different e-mail address or something that confused WordPress.

Hi Lillie – I’m going to check this out right now. As you know, I kind of abandoned my novel in frustration way before I was ill. I need to make the decision whether to abandon it completely or get back to the original story.

    • Lillie says:

      Cath,

I hope this will spur you to get back to your novel—either get reinspired and continue or change paths if you decide it’s not working.

      Bluestocking,

I e-mailed you with information about Richard Turner’s book: Re-Deal. I will announce it here when it is released, and I will be interviewing Richard—rather a character from Re-Deal—in late March.

That sounds pretty awesome. I’ve been getting more interested in writing lately, and I checked out the Facebook event and the information there is also enlightening. Thanks for sharing!
