A Thirty-Six Year Tragedy

January 22, 2009 by

Today is the 36th anniversary of Roe v Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the US. In those 36 years, nearly 50 MILLION babies have been denied the right to life.

  • How many of them would have been scientists or researchers who discovered cures for diseases or improved food production methods?
  • How many of them would have been city council members, state legislators, Senators, Congressmen, even President?
  • How many of them would have composed beautiful music, created masterpieces of art, or written inspiring books?
  • How many of them would have become entrepreneurs or doctors or lawyers or ministers or social workers or factory workers or teachers or maintenance men or managers?
  • How many would have brought joy to their loved ones by their lovely smiles, their generous natures, their giving hearts?

Their deaths in the womb destroyed their chances of being the persons God created them to be. The Bible talks about the sanctity of life created by God in His own image.

I’ve written about the sanctity of life in The Most Basic Human Right: Life and Slavery and Abortion: Moral Relatives. In the post In Memory of 40 Million Aborted Babies, I linked to this powerful message: Think of Me Turning 34 Today. Just change 34 to 36 and realize how many more people aren’t turning 36 today.

O GOD, merciful and compassionate, who art ever ready to hear the prayers of those who put their trust in thee; Graciously hearken to us who call upon thee, and grant us thy help in this our need; end the evil of abortion and let the children live. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  1. It’s sad that so many people don’t respect the fundamental value of human life.

      Morgan,

However, most of those same people consider their own lives to be sacrosanct and their own rights inviolable.

      Bluestocking,

Thanks to your aunt for her willingness to stand up for what she believes in and for advocating for the unborn.

Why human beings were so selfish and mean? Sometimes, I was ashamed to become a human being, Lillie.

      wilson,

I think it’s human nature to think of self first, and if people can avoid thinking about what they’re doing, they can rationalize that what they are doing is OK.

I remember reading a story about a doctor who was one of the first doctors to go into the abortion business after the passage of Roe v Wade. I wish I could remember where I found it so I could link to it because it is a powerful story.

This abortionist said he and his colleagues just laughed at how much money they were making and never thought about what they were doing. If they thought at all, it was that they were doing women a favor by eliminating problems from their lives.

Then ultrasound was invented, and for the first time he saw what he had been destroying. He immediately quit performing abortions and became a pro-life advocate.

He said he had no religious conversion or anything like that. He simply looked at an ultrasound and realized that he was looking at a living being, not a blob of tissue as he his fellow abortionists had said.

Of course, there are many, many stories of abortionists and abortion clinic workers coming to a religious faith and realizing they were commiting murder. But this story was so powerful to me because this was not a person changed by a spiritual awakening but merely by seeing a fetus in ultrasound.

Now that every abortionist can look into an ultrasound and see life, I can’t imagine how they live with themselves. That’s why they don’t want women to be given information or allowed to see ultraound. If women really knew—or admitted to themselves what they must know deep down in their hearts—that their babies are living human beings, I believe many of those who get abortions would let their children live.

Abortion is one thing I’ve always felt very strongly against, and actually have gone to DC a few times on Jan 22nd for the March of Life, though I haven’t gone recently since my kids are too little to handle the cold and the walk. It’s an amazing experience though and I hope when my kids are older to take them – I can’t think of a more powerful way to teach them about abortion. It’s something everybody should do…though I would rather us not need to march at all.

    • Lillie says:

      Chelle,

Thank you for marching for the right to life and for teaching your children the sanctity of life.

Let’s look forward to the day when pro-life marches in Washington are in thanksgiving that every baby has the right to be born!

  5. Baby Care says:

I cant believe 50 million babies are killed. Now i think humans are really selfish.I believe it will decrease in future.

    • Lillie says:

Baby Care (if you wrote YourName@Keywords, I could address you as a real person, and you would still get your keywork link),

The good news is that the number of abortions is decreasing every year. But those of us who believe in the sanctity of life won’t be content until they decrease to zero.

Perhaps the unaborted scientist, leader, researcher, etc. could have inspired a new society where gangsters did not exist?

    • Lillie says:

      Dan,

Of course we’ll never know what might have been. I suspect, though, that until Jesus returns, there will always be gangsters and “bad guys.”

  7. Renae says:

Hi Lillie! Thank you for this post. As a parent of an adopted child, I can speak to this issue from a different angle.

More couples than ever before are experiencing infertility issues. Who knows why? But honestly, I believe there are as many if not more couples wanting a child, who can’t have a biological child, than there are women who want to abort their babies. I wish there were a better way to pair the two! Then, the woman who, for whatever reason, doesn’t feel she can care for a child, doesn’t have to go through the emotional trauma of killing her own child. The couple who have wanted a child so desperately can have one. And the baby – well, the baby can have a chance at life – and the chance to grow up and change his or her world.

I am praying for a world where that will happen. That’s what happened to me, anyway, and I will be forever in debt and gratitude to my son’s biological mother, who made a difficult decision out of selfless love for her child.

    • Lillie says:

      Renae,

Thank you for sharing your experiences. We need to educate more woman about the benefits of adoption. The abortion industry has such a loud voice that it often drowns out other alternatives. Women who feel panicked over their pregnancy just want it all to be over with, and the abortionists and abortion advocates make it sound so easy. Keep sharing your story—it can help women see the positive alternatives to abortion.

I’m praying with you on this!

  8. Ruri says:

Abortion could be able to do if pregnant under 4 months. If woman already pregnant more than 4 months. the baby already have soul. So it similar just like they kill the baby.

    • Lillie says:

      Ruri,
I’d be interested to know where you got the 4-month stage that abortion is OK. I believe God breathes life into the embryo at the moment of conception so the soul exists from the very beginning. I can’t imagine that God would create a being without a soul for four months.

    • Lillie says:

      Dan,
I think we are going to have work harder than ever to protect the unborn. The number of abortions has been going down every year. It would be terrible if that trend reversed.

  10. Chris from Church Supplies says:

Lillie, I agree with you 110% on all of it, its a shame how people want to distort the truth and claim its 4 months, my question would be take a look at a sonogram. I know this new bill Obama will sign will hurt our cause but I would like to see people push for sonograms to be given before anyone could have an abortion.

    • Lillie says:

      Chris,

I agree that requiring all women considering abortion to see sonograms of their babies would make a big difference. Scientific technology now shows what the Bible has said all long—that babies in the womb are real people!

  11. Van says:

I believe abortions are prevalent among teenage pregnancies that we often hear about these days. I am against it and I think parents should instill the value of life to their children and be open-hearted to them when they are in this situation.

    • Lillie says:

      Van,

Yes, teenagers should be educated about the value of life. Parents should establish firm values and principles but be open and loving if their children don’t always do what’s right. After all, we’re all sinners in need of forgiveness, and we should be helping rather than condemning young teens who become pregnant.

  12. Eric from Listen to Music Online Free says:

Its a shame that a lot of people are off the deep end when it comes to appreciating the value of human life. Unfortunately, I think this world will be held accountable for what we do to the unborn and its not going to be pretty.

    • Lillie says:

      Eric,
It’s also interesting that most people think human life is of infinite value when it’s their own lives. It’s only when lives other than their own are being considered that life becomes less valuable.

  13. mark from how to prevent hair loss says:

As someone else said. One of the biggest problems is teenage pregnancy. They get pregnant and instead of talking to them. Panic. their first stopis the abortion center. Instead of getting advice and I think both them and their parents need educating.

    • Lillie says:

      mark,

Yes, education and counseling need to be available. The abortion clinics offer “counseling” that, in many/most cases is strictly a sales pitch for having an abortion. Pregnant girls and their parents (and pregnant women beyond their teens as well) need to know facts and understand their options.
