A Twisted Tale of Cover Art at The Dark Phantom Review

November 11, 2008 by Lillie

The cover art for Dream or Destiny is the topic for today’s blog book tour stop at The Dark Phantom Review. Mayra Calvani is hosting my guest post: A Twisted Tale of Cover Art. If you’ve read the book or even the free excerpt, you know this cover is perfect for the story. But it didn’t start out that way, and the twisted tale describes how it evolved.

I agree, I know a little bit about your book and I agree that the cover art goes very well with it. I still haven’t got around to actually reading it, though, so I still have to do that.

I haven’t been around in a bit (sorry I have been busy!).
Anyway the book looks great and I look forward to giving it a read!

A smoking gun – clues, it’s a murder mystery! Haven’t read this one yet. Favourite authors are Martin Amis and Will Self.

Ryan,
I haven’t read either of your favorite authors. I’ll have to check them out. Hope you’ll read my book … and hope you like it!

That was really interesting, and it explains why books and covers don’t always match. I try really hard to not judge books by their covers, but when you’re in a bookstore or a library and trying to pick one book out of hundreds, a catchy cover really can make a difference. Now that I have the internet and can get recommendations from like-minded readers, I find that I don’t rely on cover art as much as when I was younger.

Carrie,
You make a good point that recommendations from others are better for choosing a book than the cover. But a catchy cover does get our attention. And that’s important to getting the reader to pick up the book and look at it more closely.

All though recommendations are always best, if the cover art sucked it would not get very many spontaneous purchases. Haven’t read this book, but will have to check it out.
