Valerie,

Just today, my husband and I had our garage door repaired and paid the repairman with trade dollars. Almost any service business benefits from trade.

So glad to hear that small businesses have this increased opportunity to trade and heighten their visibility as is suggested in this article. The current economy has been hard on start-ups.

Bartering deserves a comeback. What used to be a staple of trade during the cottage industry era greatly diminished when trade routes opened up and people began traveling more, making the hauling around of merchandise a bit of a hassle.

Using barter to enhance your home business is a terrific idea. Printing companies are an easy avenue. They do business with everyone, and are in a prime position to barter. I love the links above to the barter organizations.

Todd,

I'm glad you've found barter as useful as I have. During down economic times is a prime time to use barter.

I have bartered many times, as I believe it is a viable way to exchange resources. It has helped us accomplish many tasks during times of the season when our cash-flow was less.

evan,

Obviously there are certain things you can't barter for: electricity, groceries, gas ...

However, there are many, many items that you can barter for. Some of the things I barter for are medical treatment, dental work, printing, dining out, travel, maid service, haircuts, home remodeling, legal services, accounting/tax preparation, and much more.

Of course, you have to have most of your income in cash, but it's really nice to have the extra barter income for luxuries that you might not be able to afford on your cash income.
