July Thanks to Commenters
August 4, 2008 by Lillie
The first time I recognized my commenters, I thanked commenters for the entire year of 2007. That was such a long list and such a long time for commenters to wait for thanks, I recognized commenters in the first and second quarters this year. Now the numbers have increased so much I’m going to thank commenters monthly. The month of July brought nearly 400 comments from 119 commenters, compared to 300+ comments from 192 commenters in the entire second quarter.
I recognize that Do Follow is one reason for the numbers of comments I get, especially from people who aren’t writers. The variety in where commenters come from and what they do/blog about amazes me. I appreciate the quality of comments and the conversation that is generated from these diverse readers.
A note about my comment policy: In determining whether a comment is legitimate or not, I tend to give commenters the benefit of the doubt. However, I usually delete generic comments such as “thanks” or ”great blog.” I approve comments from people who leave keywords instead of names … but I really prefer to address people by name.
Thanks to these July commenters:

If I’ve overlooked someone who commented in July or made a mistake in names or links, please let me know. Thanks again to each commenter and to each of you who read and never let us know you’re here.

Thanks back to you, Lillie. I appreciate this, and I also commend that you put in the time to put this together – no small feat!
James,
I’ve got a pretty good system now so it doesn’t take as long as it did the first time. I appreciate the comments.
I like your style of blog and perhaps it is one of few blogs which welcome comments in such a nice way. Do you use some plugin to compile all of them or do you do it manually? I shall be implementing it on one of my blog.
Cristiana,
Thank you for the lovely compliment. I do enjoy comments from my readers.
Whenever I reply to a comment, I copy and paste the name and link into a spreadsheet. I record the date of the comment, and if the same person comments again, I just add a new date in the same record. It’s easy to count the comments—I add a column to the spreadsheet with the number of comments, then sort by that column. I copy and paste the columns with the name and URL into a Word document, convert the table to text, then copy and paste the text into the blog post.
What a lovely surprise. It’s nice to be appreciated like this. More power to you, Lillie!
Thank you. It’s nice to have commenters to appreciate.
Thanks for the comment recognition, Lillie! I must say that the number of commenters your posts attract never ceases to amaze me!
Jeanne
Jeanne,
You’re no more amazed than I am! As I said in the post, I know Do Follow has a lot to do with people wanting to comment. However, I get really meaningful and insightful comments. I delete the “great blog” type comments that don’t add to the conversation.
And I certainly appreciate that you are always one of the top contributors.
I always enjoy reading and commenting here, Lillie — and it’s certainly clear that many others do, too!
Well, aren’t you clever?
Thanks for the link, Lillie, and what a nice way to do this. You made everyone a special title! I love it!
Amy Derbys last blog post..Ninja Kick Your Competition
Thanks, Jeanne. I’m so happy to get so many comments. That was the thing that really surprised me about blogging. When I first started, I thought I would be sharing my brilliance like I was on a stage.
Having conversations is so much better.
Amy,
I’m glad you appreciate the thanks. I appreciate the comments.
With blogging, you get to do both!
Right, Jeanne. But the conversations are far more beneficial than my meager attempts at brilliance.
Thanks, much. Compiling a list of commenters can certainly be a task and I appreciate the effort. I did it once late last year and, since I don’t get nearly the amount of comments as you, it was probably easier than what what you had for this post. Again, thanks!
Mike Goads last blog post..Aged and Weathered Logs
I’m again on the list! Thanks so much for the credit, the link love, and being such a great person! I guess that’s one of the many reasons, besides great content, that make your comment numbers increase like that!
Alina
Alina,
You are so sweet! Thank you for the lovely compliment as well as for being a regular contributor.
Thanks for the inclusion Lillie!
Let me take the chance to invite you and some of your commenters to participate in my guest blogging contest for $150:
http://jobmob.co.il/blog/2008-guest-blogging-contest/
Jacob,
I hope to write a guest post your contest. It’s on my to-do list … but sometimes not everything on the list gets done.
Yet, if your “meager attempts at brilliance” were unsuccessful, there would be no conversations!
Thanks, Jeanne. Whatever else is happening here, I’m having fun!
Wow!!! That is all I can say after finding this blog. That is amazing the way you are giving back to your readers who have been commenting on your blog. I’m sure that is appreciated so much for those that have their own websites.
That is truely very nice of you.
Me, too! And, by the way, I think it’s great the way these comments, while not technically “nested” after the sixth comment, are still grouped together as part of our ongoing conversation, rather than being relegated to the very end of the comments section.
Thanks, Lillie! You are always so thoughtful to thank us for our comments! I love coming here and soaking in your wealth of wisdom.

I don’t think I’ve seen many blogs create such a wonderful post. It is awesome that you appreciate comments so much.
Andrew. Attorney.s last blog post..Two More Fredericksburg Small Businesses Closing
Thank you, Andrew. Actually, I got the idea from other bloggers who regularly thank commenters. So, while the idea certainly isn’t original with me, it does reflect how much I appreciate comments.
Renae,
I think what you’re describing as a “wealth of wisdom” is really just many years of lots of experiences. There are benefits to being old.
Jeanne,
Brian’s Threaded Comments is one of my favorite plugins. I love being able to reply to a specific commenter and have the comment appear with the original. Seldom is there a need to go beyond 6 levels of nesting, but, like you, I appreciate the comments being kept together even if they aren’t nested.
Jesse,
I’m glad to recognize my commenters, who really make the blog what it is. I’m always delighted to find more information in the comments to expand on what was in the original post, and I love chatting with my readers/friends.
Hello, I am for the first time on your blog and I think it`s very cool, and you don`t hate commenters like another bloggers. Now I`ll subscribe your rss and I`ll read all your post and if I can I`ll post comments. Thanks!
A. Smith,
The bloggers I know like commenters as long as the comments are relevant to the post. I enjoy conversations with my readers and look forward to more comments from you.
So you are managing it manually and in a very efficient way. I was thinking to find some plugin for that. I think there should be a plugin for it because it can save a lot of time.
adhss last blog post..Farbstoffe und ADHS
I’d love to find a plugin that would do this. If you come across one, please let me know. I thought maybe one of the top commenter plugins might do it—I know they keep track of how many comments people make but I don’t know if there’s one will accumulate the totals in a specific month and include the commenter’s name and their hyperlinked site.
thanks for the mention!

OMG….I’m finally OUTSTANDING!
I know. Pathetic. But yo, I need SOME goals in life.
Seriously…I love this blog. Keep up the good work, Lillie!
At the rate you’re going now—and if Akismet doesn’t eat your comments—you’re headed for MAJOR … maybe you could make TOP this month.
Thanks so much Lillie. You are great about sharing the love. I gave you a link back on my blog:

Bonnie,
Thanks! I appreciate commenters very much.
Hey, thanks for the recognition and the links! Always appreciated. I’m glad you don’t flag the keywords as spam, to me, if a comment is useful, why not reward someone with a nice link? Everyone wins, and it seems you realize that. Keep up the good work.
David,
When I read this comment in the dashboard, I thought for a minute that I had forgotten to schedule a post I’ve written for later in the week and that you were responding to that article. I bring up this very subject again. I don’t mind at all responding to David@Cheap Digital DSLRs—I’m not comfortable responding to Cheap Digital DSLRs. Though I won’t flag those comments as spam, I feel awkward because it doesn’t seem like I’m replying to a person. But it’s fine to include keywords with your name—I and other readers feel like you’re a real person, and you get the keyword link. Everybody’s happy.
[...] brought more comments from fewer commenters than July: more than 400 comments from 100 commenters. I appreciate each and every comment, though I prefer [...]
What a brilliant post. This is a brilliant way to thank your contributors. I’ll do something similar myself too.
Thank you so much. Power to you.

Dan,
I’m glad you like my thanks and plan to do something similar.
I reply to all comments, but my nested replies were lost when I moved my blog.
It is so nice to see you take the time out to thank your commentators, I’ve not seen any other blog with such a nice touch. Keep up the good work.

Elton,
I know a number of blogs that regularly thank commenters, though most of them don’t have as many comments/commenters as I do.
Wow, this was really cool to see! I’m new to blogging, I love the fact that you thank your commentors.

Susie,
Although this is a very old post, I still thank commenters. One thing has changed, though. I no longer allow comments from keywords. I see on this list I am thanking keywords as well as people. Now I talk to people only and send keyword comments to spam, so I don’t have quite as many to thank.
Seems everywhere I look people are using this commentluv and keywordluv, really a revolution towards the purpose of the web. Which is of course sharing. Keep Bloggin’, I’m gonna have a look around.
Katy,
Keyword Luv and Comment Luv are great for commenters. Hope you enjoy your visit and come back often.
Mike,
I’ve got a system down that makes it pretty easy to create the post. I keep track of comments as I respond to them. The only problem is that when I copy and paste from Word, garbage HTML creeps in. Somehow all the names ended up underlined, which wasn’t intentional … but I’ll just pretend that what’s I meant all along.
