25 Words of Work/Life Wisdom
July 20, 2008 by Lillie
Look at me …
Listen to me …
Give to me …
Help me …
How did it become about loving yourself instead of loving your neighbor as yourself?
This was intended to be an entry in Liz Strauss’ 25 Words of Work / Life Wisdom Writing Project but I got tied up on a project and lost track of time. I decided to post it even though it’s late.
Added 7/21: Liz included my late entry. Take a look at a slide show of all the amazing entries in 25 Words of Wisdom.

Hi Lillie – That is brilliant. And many people in the social networking community would benefit from reading it.
I too didnt get my piece written in time. But I’m in awe of the pieces I’ve read so far. There really is some amazingly talented writers in the blogosphere.
Cath,
I’m eager to read Liz’ wrap-up post with all the entries. I too have read many outstanding posts.
I understand why you didn’t get yours done – you’ve spent so much time on your wonderful thank-you link love post.
Your post reminded me of a song. I think the lyrics are:
What about me, it isn’t fair
I’ve had enough, now I want my share
Can’t you see, I wanna live
But you just take more than you give,
So, I guess you could add, What about me to the list. although you’d then have more than 25 words, ehh maybe no one will notice.

Stonewriter,
“What about me” would be a good addition … if it weren’t for that pesky 25-word limit.
Dan,
“See me” would be a good addition … if it weren’t for that pesky 25-word limit.
Due to my interest in various blogs and the interesting blog posts, I have too many ideas but haven’t time to write. Some articles and blogs always make me delighted and happy so yours is one of those.

I know what you mean. I spend a lot of time reading other blogs rather than writing my own.
Very nice ideas! I had it on my to-do list as well; alas, this one did fall thru.
But it’s very thought-provoking to see what others offer.
Enjoy, Barbara

Barbara,
Sometimes we just can’t do it all. I went ahead and posted this even though it was too late for the group writing project because I had been thinking about it and had it put together in my head … just didn’t get it from my head to the blog in time.
What a great idea. I would call it the “Wisdom Distiller”.
“Wisdom Distiller” is a good description. Be sure to go over to Liz’ blog and read all the entries when she posts them. I’ve read some on other blogs, and they are really great. I’m sure there are many more I’ve missed.

Very thoughtful, Lillie. So glad you made the list of contributors to this fun and insightful exercise! Cheers!
The phrase “loving your neighbor as yourself” means that first you need to love yourself. Actually, you can’t love anybody at all if you don’t love yourself first.
Great contribution Lillie! The power of human nature: selfishness! It’s one power I think many of us fight, and many more fail to overcome!
All of the posts have been very insightful, but I have to say that you have had one of the best!! Thanks Lillie.

Despite the fact that the deadline had passed, your words were wonderful. Just because they don’t meet the time constraints doesn’t make them any less necessary. Thanks for sharing.

Polina,
Absolutely. It’s hard to cover the complete thought in 25 words but based on the theme of the challenge – to write 25 words about something you see too much or not enough of – I wrote 25 words about destructive narcissism, not healthy self-love.
I think you said a lot with only 25 words. Really a lot of people do have the ‘me’ attitude and don’t have that neighborly attitude anymore.
I try to treat others how I like to be treated and when someone helps me, I always go out of my way to help them.
Lillie,
Your entries always amaze me. This is so simple, so eloquent, and unfortunately so often true. But we can strive to be better, can’t we? And that’s what this reminds me to try and do!
Thank you! You bless my day, may God bless yours!

Fortunately, there are still a lot of people like you in the world. but the “me first” attitude is quite prevalent.
This is indeed an insightful entry, Lillie!
Bravo!
Jeanne
Jeanne,
Thank you. I appreciate your encouragement and support.
Lillie,
I really like it. It’s packed with meaning–and so true!
Jeanne,
I wish it weren’t so true! But I’m glad there are still many people – like my readers and commenters, including you – that it doesn’t describe.
Thanks, Lillie!
You’re welcome, Jeanne.
I think that you could build “love me” in there somewhere – but i guess that might make it too mushy, eh?
hank,
“Love me” is good … but I was limited to 25 words and couldn’t fit everything in.
help me?
I don’t consider help me as words of wisdom… ?!?!
You obviously missed my point. The first four phrases were common expressions that we hear often from selfish people – of whom there are too many in the world – and the last phrase is reflecting on that, basically asking why there are so many self-centered people in the world today. The entire 25 words comprise a single thought. I won’t claim my words are wise; they were my attempt to respond to the challenge of creating 25 words of wit or wisdom.
Our writing, Our thoughts, Our lifestyle, and our blogs, Everything have been changed. We think in different way. For me, values of my life have been changed. I was not doing the right thing a few years ago but I am on the right track now. That’s why I am here to read comments here.

Great article. Thanks for sharing these article with use. Every time when I open your blog I read something new and interesting for me.
A. Smith,
I’m glad you’re finding new and interesting things on my blog. I’ll keep trying to write things worth reading and look forward to seeing you back here often.
All that we should try in life is use the word ‘we’ instead of ‘I’, and wisdom follows you.

Sriraj,
Yes, “we” is much more effective than “I.”
Robert,
Thanks. Liz was nice enough to include me even though I was late. Since I’m the target (or one of the targets) of your “Don’t wait until the last minute, you know who I mean” comments on WILF, I think my being late is something you’ve had a little experience with.
Eric,
I think most of fight being selfish and sometimes we’re more successful than others.
Thank you. Liz was kind enough to include my words in the wrap-up even though I was late. If you haven’t already, see the slide show of all the entries.
Lisa,
You are so sweet. I see simplicity and truth in my own writing, but never eloquence. Your words are a blessing to me.
Thankfully, the “me-first” attitude doesn’t describe most of us all the time. It describes all of us some of the time, and we can work to make that much less. Unfortunately, it describes some people all the time.
Schuppen,
It’s great to hear that you have changed your life for the better. Change is not easy—especially change that makes us better people—but it is so worthwhile. Stay on the right track.
