Eight Random Facts

June 4, 2008 by Lillie

isabella mori at change therapy tagged me to share 8 random facts about myself. I’ve done several similar memes before:

To keep this relevant to my blog – and to come up with something that I haven’t shared in the above posts – I’m going to share 8 facts about my work habits and attitudes.

  1. When I’m working on a project, I sit at the computer for hours on end to avoid interrupting the process – not good for arthritic bones! I’m trying to force myself to get up and move around at least once an hour, but I’m not doing a very good job of it.
  2. Though experts in productivity often recommend you do the most important projects first, I work more efficiently if I first read my e-mail and do small tasks that may not be urgent but bother me if left undone.
  3. Because of the odd hours I work, a client can send me a rush project at the end of her work day and have it waiting in her inbox when she starts work the next day.
  4. Since I don’t like to talk on the telephone, I communicate by e-mail whenever I can.
  5. I’ve been accused of being a perfectionist and a control freak, for which I plead the fifth.
  6. My dream and fear is to get caught up on all my work: What would it be like to have few days with nothing to do? But what if those few days turned into an extended drought?
  7. I seem to have missed the vocabulary lesson on the word “no.” When someone asks if I can do something, my automatic response if “of course.”
  8. Taking Sunday off is a high priority for me though I work long hours the rest of the week.

Since not all bloggers participate in memes, I’m not tagging 8 people as the meme instructs. If you’d like to share 8 random facts about yourself, leave a comment so I can read your post.

  1. hmmm … so you did this meme because you couldn’t say no?

    isabella,

I hadn’t thought of that. :-) Actually, I do say “no” to memes sometimes. It’s when someone asks if I can do something that I can’t say “no.” If I don’t know how, I want to learn something new.

  3. Patrick says:

I’m not a big fan of memes because, one, I find it time consuming, and second, because I don’t like the idea of sharing some things about my life online. They’re fun to read, though, I’ll give them that.

    Patrick,
I don’t participate in a lot of memes but every once in a while, they’re fun.

  5. Lillie,

Thanks for sharing those eight fascinating facts about your work habits! It’s always interesting to read about another writer’s idiosyncrasies, because–let’s face it–we all have them, and it makes us feel more normal, I think. LOL!

That’s good, Jeanne. Sharing our idisyncrasies makes us feel normal. :-)

  7. “Since I don’t like to talk on the telephone, I communicate by e-mail whenever I can.”

    Totally agree with that one!

    Vlad,
I guess as a writer I just express myself better in writing. However, for many years, I did a lot of public speaking – not sure why I liked that but don’t like talking on the phone. :-)

    Lillie,

“I seem to have missed the vocabulary lesson on the word “no.” When someone asks if I can do something, my automatic response if “of course.”

I completely agree with you on this one. I’ve taken on too much at once because I can’t say no or I don’t think about saying something like, “I can’t do this for you now, but I can in 2 weeks.”

    Kerrie,

This is probably a common situation. I’m really overtaxed right now with lots of work.

  11. Hakan Se says:

4.Since I don’t like to talk on the telephone, I communicate by e-mail whenever I can.

    without telephone… I can’t imagine that.

  12. Lillie says:

    Hakan Se,
I don’t function without using the telephone. However, if the message can be delivered just as effectively by phone or e-mail, I always choose e-mail.

There are several reasons for this: 1) since I work mostly at night, most people are sleeping when I’m working and vice-versa so I have to adjust my schedule for phone calls; 2) writing an e-mail gives me an opportunity to think through what I’m saying and to write it clearly – I’m more effective in written than in oral communication; 3) an e-mail creates a permanent record of what was said so there’s no confusion later of who said what.
