World Book and Copyright Day

April 23, 2008 by Lillie

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has proclaimed April 23rd as World Book and Copyright Day.

By celebrating this Day throughout the world, UNESCO seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright.

Although this day doesn’t seem to be oberved in the US, I want to add my voice to the promotion of “reading, publishing and … copyright.”

Thanks for the reminder. I’ll read an extra book to my kids today, and we’ll even look at the publisher and talk about copyright.(All in honor of my friend, Lillie!) :-)

I don’t quite get this. A reading, publishing, and intellectual property day? It seems a bit bizarre to link intellectual property to reading and publishing but I guess there is a small link between them.

Free (If you wrote YourName@Keywords, I could address you as a real person, and you would still get your keyword link),

Obviously you are in the business of sharing copyright free files, which is fine. I like to use copyright-free images myself.

However, writers and others in the publishing industry who make their living from selling their intellectual property recognize there would be no publishing industry and few books for anyone to read with copyright protection.

Writers and artists who are hobbyists can afford to give their work away; writers and artists who are professionals cannot.

Never heard of World Book and Copyright Day before. It is definitely important to protect copyright and other intellectual property. It’s what drive creativity and innovation.

ryan,

I’d never heard of it, either. It doesn’t seem to be celebrated in the US.
