Freelance Writers Appreciation Week
February 14, 2008 by Lillie
Thanks for Kristen King at Inkthinker for pointing out the week of February 10-16 is Freelance Writers Appreciation Week. Kristen invites comments from her readers on what they appreciate about the freelance writing life. I said:
Among the many things I appreciate about the freelance writing life are being able to work from home on my own schedule and getting paid for doing something I love.
Erica Hanson has declared the entire month of February Hug a Freelance Writer Month.

I didn’t know it was Freelance Writers Appreciation Week. Since it is … thank you to freelance writers everywhere. And thank you Lillie. I enjoy reading your blog.
And big ((((Cyber Hugs)))) to you too, Lillie!
Your thoughts are lovely regarding the freelance writing life. I feel the same way!
Smiles,
Michele
I think home based businesses are going to be the wave of the future. This type of business let’s you work on your own terms, your hours and your location. It also opens you up to the tax advantages of the rich. You can write off your materials you use, promotional items, rent, mileage, and even going out to eat.
NOTE: ADVERTISING FOR HOME-BASED BUSINESS UNRELATED TO FREELANCE WRITING REMOVED BY ADMINISTRATOR.
My wife didn’t know there was a Freelance Writer Appreciation Week and she is one and she appreciates it as much as you do Lillie. Two hugs from both of us.
I had no clue there was a week for freelance writers! Though without them the internet would be a pretty blank place, as so many websites use them for their copy.
Thanks for all the writing freelancers! And thank you Lillie for the great blog.
Darn, I missed my week completely! I will accept the hugs, though. A writer’s life can sometimes be lonely.
I know I am a month late, but Happy Freelance Writer’s day. I have enjoyed reading your blog. Keep up the great work.

Dear Lillie,
Your post was the first notice I had of this holiday, and of course I arrived too late to celebrate. I think I’ll still take a moment to enjoy an extra cup of coffee, cat on lap, as I look over my next project. The life of a freelance writer is worth celebrating!

P.S. You may also enjoy celebrating Words Matter Week with the National Association of Independent Writers and Editors at http://www.NAIWE.com. It’s the first full week in March.

Janice,
Thank you for letting me know about Words Matter Week. I’ve made a note on my blog editorial calendar to post about it on Monday of that week.
March is a busy month—it’s also Small Press Month and the second week is Read an E-Book Week.
That hug made me smile. I’d love to be a writer, but when you’re already half way through med school, people wonder why in the world you’d give it up. I’d love to have that freedom.
Amy,
You’ll make a lot more money as a doctor than you would as a writer.

I recently bought a lovely book for charity with short stories from various freelance writers, iwas so impressed, they all did a lovely job.
toni,
Glad you enjoyed the book and that freelancers are banding together for charity.
Thanks, Helen.
I did a search for Freelance Writers Appreciation Week after I read Kristen’s article and didn’t find much on it. There doesn’t appear to be any organized activity – obviously, this doesn’t generate the florist and restaurant business that Secretaries Week and other observances do.
But freelance writers certainly deserve to be appreciated … if we have to do it ourselves!
Thanks, Michele. We are blessed to live the freelance writing life.
Damien,
Thanks for your comment and for pointing out benefits of home-based business. I had to remove your advertising for your network marketing business as I don’t permit advertising in comments. I allowed the rest of your comment to remain because most freelance writing businesses are home-based. However, each home-based business owner must determine what expenses are allowable with their own tax advisor. “Going out to eat” is an allowable deduction only if the meal with a prospect or client or business associate has a business purpose. No deducting that romantic Valentine’s Day dinner with your spouse. Darn.
Hugs to your wife too.
Thanks! I’m glad you appreciate the contributions of freelance writers to the Internet and you enjoy my blog.
We’ll have to follow Erica Hanson’s lead and just make the whole month of February our month, Angela!
Thank you, Jason! I hope you continue to enjoy my blog.
