You're right that e-books have to compete with all forms of entertainment. Your idea of the trend toward flash fiction and bite-sized pieces is interesting. I posted here recently about Daily Lit, which sends out bite-sized pieces of the classics in e-mail or RSS feed. On the other hand, some e-publishers will accept much longer works than print publishers because the cost of publishing doesn't increase with increased word count. I suspect there will be a broad range of e-books, including lots of nonfiction because of the faster time to market and ease of updating.

Certainly there are many issues with e-books, the largest being the intangibility of it...but the possibilities are endless. For example, we just released Transmigrant Blues as a serial blog, and Blues4Kalihas been read on four continents in electronic form this last year.
That said, an e-book has not only to compete with print publishers, but all other activity on the internet for a reader's attention...so I think the trend will be toward flash fiction and bite-sized pieces.
