Success!
January 11, 2007 by Lillie
After bemoaning the many spam comments on blogs, I downloaded the Akismet plugin for WordPress … and I haven’t had a spam comment since! According to Akismet’s Web site, it is catching more than 600,000 spam comments a day, and 94% of all comments are spam. If your blog is being buried in spam, I recommend this solution.

Evelyn,
You’ll never know how many delightful comments you’ll miss: “I couldn’t have sead it better myself,” “keep it commming,” … not to mention porn, gambling, ‘replica’ purse and watches, and ‘pill’ ads!
Good luck with your new blog and with your goals for 2007!
Lillie
My site has yet to be indexed, so no spam yet, but I’ll take your advice and install Akismet procatively to ward off the little buggers!
cool blog.
Lillie, I suggest you get the spellcheck plugin while you are at it!
Akismet has done it for me too – and KeywordLuv option is a nice way to keep a balance between motivating people and spam.
Brian,
Not long after this post was written a couple of years ago, WordPress started including Akismet. I don’t know what I would do without it; the spam problem is even worse now, but Akismet does an excellent job.
[...] I wrote about spam in an earlier post. The problem with comment spam in blogs is getting worse; I’ve found some plug-ins for WordPress that I will try and let you know the results. Update: Success with Akismet! [...]
You’ve made the right move here. Akisment has somehow become a necessity for bloggers nowadays. One of the great plugins indeed.
Jane,
Akismet is so necessary that now WordPress comes with Akismet already included.
LOL! When I upgraded WordPress some time ago, a lot of posts suddenly got those weird characters in them. I corrected the most recent posts (at that time); however, I did not take the time to go back through all the posts and make the corrections. I update the post if I link to it from a current post or when I get a comment on an old post (as in this case – note the weird character is gone).
As an editor, I cringe at errors like this, but since this blog is a hobby for me, I do not have the time to go back through a hundred or two old posts and search out the weird characters that appeared from the upgrade.
Speaking of spell check, read my latest posts. I had quite an experience with spell check in Word recently. That’s not the spell check I used for blog posts – I create posts in BlogDesk and use its spell check – but it’s interesting that you make a comment on a year old post about spell check just a couple of days about my post on spell check.
