Volunteer Activities

I’ve been doing a lot of work on the Web site for my church — All Saints Anglican in San Antonio. If you’re a Christian, you might enjoy some of the features, such as Bible search, Bible verse randomizer, free e-cards, an inspirational movie … If you’re a non-Christian curious about what Christians believe, visit the site to learn more.

Today the Women of All Saints (and several men) had a work day at the church. The men and several of the ladies worked outside upgrading the landscaping. The rest of us stayed inside where it was cool and packed a box of toys and games to send to Fr. Jerry Sherbourne for Operation School Drop, a project involving both the Army and Iraqi police to deliver educational games to Iraqi schools and villages.

The Last Boat Out: Memoirs of a Triumphant Vietnamese-American Family by the Truongs

GASLight Publishing has released The Last Boat Out: Memoirs of a Triumphant Vietnamese-American Family. On April 29, 1975 – one day before the fall of Saigon, Truong-Nhu Dinh and his wife Nga fled Vietnam. They left everything behind but their five children and their cherished values and traditions. As the boat left the port, they said goodbye to Vietnam and hello to a new life … wherever that might be. On April 29, 2006, the Truong-Nhus celebrated their triumphs and thirty-one years in America with the publication of their memoirs. Working with the authors to edit their manuscript, which had been written in Vietnamese and translated by the authors’ son and daughter-in-law, was a great privilege. The early reviews are excellent. (2/1/08: The book is now out of print.)

Spring House: Book 1 in the Westward Sagas by David Bowles

Spring House Front CoverSpring House: Book 1 in the Westward Sagas by David Bowles is now available. I really enjoyed helping the author bring this book to fruition and am pleased with the excellent reviews the book is receiving. Spring House—the first in the Westward Sagas, a series of historical novels based on his family history—is about the Revolutionary War in North Carolina and is historically accurate although it’s written as a novel. The book is suitable for young people as well as adults. The author is also available to speak about the Revolutionary War, researching and preserving family history, and other topics.

EPIC New Voices

EPICon, the conference of EPIC, the Electronically Published Internet Connection, was a big success here in San Antonio in mid-March 2006. I coordinated a writing contest for middle school and high school students, and we received a number of excellent entries. The winning short stories, poems, and essays have been published in an anthology, EPIC New Voices 2006, which is available for free download from the EPIC Web site.

EPIC New Voices 2007 will be open for entries between August 1, 2006 and November 1, 2006. Please pass on the information to any budding writers you know in middle school or high school.

Hello!

June 11, 2006 by Lillie

After years of updating my Web site with news that became outdated and after helping several clients start their own blogs, I’ve finally decided to start my own.

I’ll include news about projects I’m working on - starting with a few posts to update you on my recent activities.

Since one of the reasons I love editing so much is that I can help other writers become their best, I’ll be sharing helpful tips and advice on writing and editing.

As a big fan of electronic publishing and small, independent presses, I’ll be covering these topics as well.

I look forward to sharing this experience with you!
